When I’m walking and turning left or right, I’ll sometimes make an imaginary pole plant. I know that sounds goofy, but I bet I’m not alone. Anyone else do it or something else equally peculiar?
I guess I'm pretty peculier. I imagine skiing a tight line when I'm descending stairs...

When i'm walking around a corner, sometimes lean into the turn. Funny thread. When I really think about it I do it more often than I thought.

Been there, done that. Also, after a day of skiing slopes with some nice hills on them, you know the kind where you just smoothly go up and down, I find that when I'm driving and I hit some bumps, I still imagine myself skiing. Same happens with my wife. :)

I weave in and out of traffic and from one lane to another like I'm skiing a slalom course!

Well, not true at all, but it would make a good excuse if you got pulled over.

Well I can't say that i do pole plants. But whenever driving in the mountains you'll find me crossing the yellow line or hitting the dirt on the shoulder of the road becuase im always picking out lines in the hills im driving through.

im sure everyone else finds themselves doing this as well.

After a day of skiing, my feet/ankles will still be initiating turns as I'm riding in the car - especially if it's a windy, downhill road leading away from the ski hill.

My pole planting in the bumps needs improving. When I can, I visualize this in mind, trying to get the timing right as I picture myself going down the bumps.

When I was thatching in the spring, I made small mounds in bump formation. My daughter saw this and knew what was on my mind…..

What do you think you're doing wrong?

I’m not keeping my hands out in front of me. Usually happens with my left hand, my pole release is not fast enough so the hand stays behind or to the side of my body. This gets me out of position thus my balance is shot.

It's funny because I’m a lefty but it makes sense since my right turns are stronger and cleaner. Probably, less things to process when I make a right turn. What I tend to do is after a clean sequence of moves, I try to remember what I did right and store it in memory. The problem is when I'm in the bumps its happening so fast, I'll freeze because my mind was pre occupied with the past.

I use to have a similar problem and never realized it until I asked a NSFEF coach at Whiteface to watch me run a bump course. He said I was leaving my hands back a little bump to bump. He told me to keep them in front where I can see them and just flick them with my wrist. It was a simple adjustment to something I didn't realize I was doing and it helped alot.

Bump on Bro.

When I rollerblade I make turns using ski technique. I also made imaginary pole plants. For a while I used real poles, but the neighbors kept asking my wife I was doing so the poles went away. Rollerblading is the closest thing I can find to making turns on the slopes. If it weren't for the cars and the occasional deer I could really get lost in it.

A common problem in bumps...I used to leave my hands behind me too. And I still have to mentally focus on keeping my hands in front of me.

This is a problem that may also be related to pole length. It's hard to keep your hands in front of you and flick your wrists if your poles are too long and they get in the way.
