Incredible Ski Area Panoramas (VT)

I was just taking a look at photographer Robert Lyon's website and he has some simply incredible work for sale. I figured I'd post some samples. Go to his site and take a look. Some incredible shots such as:

Just quibbling, in the first Jay photo, the sky looks patched in - the sun is setting too far north for a winter view. Not sure about the Stowe view.

Is that you? I'm actually hoping to replace some of the random, aging assortment of "art" that I have hanging around the inn with some nice framed prints/photos. Of course, my budget is limited, as always, but I'd probably need a number of them. We should talk.

At first, I was ready to agree with you, but I think it depends on what time of year that pic was shot. In Google Earth, here's roughly the same view as the photo in question:

The sun is indeed setting a bit north of due West which would make no sense in say, December. I found this neat application which gives you sun/moon-rise/set directions for any location and on any date:

But that pic could easily be early April which puts the sunset direction north of due West.

*Sigh* That Jay photo kicks the Jones up slightly. It used to just be a mountain I skied at for the powder and the trees. I hadn't realized it until I actually considered "not" getting a pass there and spreading things around a bit more that it really has grown on me and I feel emotionally attached. That pic just reminds me how much I truly enjoy that mountain, great shot.

Though I think the Burke shot is better. I have seen it in full size and the internet image does not even do the actual print justice. The Jay shot definitely works from the right perspective later in the season. Jay is a weird mountain to judge angles and directions based on its faces.

Interesting to me is that the Jay photos are at pretty similar angles and distances from the east. Definitely nowhere near the same spot, but none the less, they are photos from the east.

In one photo Big Jay is very prominent. The autumn photo it doesn't appear at all, hidden by state side.

It's kind of funny that after these awesome photos go up, one of the first reactions is, "gee, that must be fake." :roll: I doubt that they are fake. Lyons has been doing this kind of photography for many years. Maybe folks are showing a cynical sense of humor, and maybe the jones getting the best of some, but really can't we do better?

nice job busting the myth! I saw that pic too, thought it looked shopped, but internal debate dismissed this as something a professional photographer would be very unlikely to do with a pic like that.

my comments weren't suggesting fake....just commentary. It's funny how mountains / angles play tricks on you. One that always gets me is heading south on 89 from Burlington. There is one point where you come around a corner and Camel's Hump is BAM right in your face and seems very close, travel a mile further and seems far away again.

I find Jay to be especially interesting in that regard. Honestly, I have skied there more than any other area, and I still occasionally get twisted around and end up on a different angle than I intended. Basically, you can ski off any of Jay's peaks in 180+ degrees so it is easy to get turned around on the mountain (specifically in the trees when trying to find specific slots) and I can see how even looking at the mountain from the sky could be weird. Just a few degrees difference could mean a very minor change in the overall "look" of the area in a picture but could be a significantly different angle.
