Is Shawnee Peak doable from North Conway on a day trip?
According to Google Maps, the distance is not bad - 20 miles on Route 302.
But I'm not sure what Route 302 is like during the winter, since Google Maps gives no regard to winter conditions.

Very doable. Approximately 30-45 minutes from North conway and Route 302 is fine in the winter. Great place for night skiing. I believe it is actually the largest night skiing facility in New England.

watch your speed going through Fryeberg. I recall a lot of speed traps in that town as I used to take 302 all the time to get from Portland to Wildcat.

Depending on where you are in North Conway, it should be 30 mins max if thwe weather is ok. Definately worth the trip. They do a great job. I ski there all the time.

maybe just my timing. I just seem to always recall cops hanging out coming from the East into town before the Academy where the speed limit drops

They do like to patrol that pretty regularly. The police dept is always struggling for money so they like to get as many speeding tickets as possible. But watch your speed and enjoy skiing at the Peak. Massive snowmaking effort going on right now! Dress warm though!

Yep, very doable. I live in Fryeburg. North Conway is 20 mins one way, Shawnee Peak, 15 - 20 the other. Yes, watch your speed through Fryeburg and also Center Conway which is much worse for speed traps.

Maybe it has been my timing. Maybe they're mellow on Sundays. : - )

So the police dept can divert the penalties to their way? sort of eat-what-you-kill?
I've always assumed that the money would go to the municipality coffer for general use.
Anyways, I'm not doing well financially myself, so I'll be extra careful.

Easy.

One of the big hotels in town has a ski and stay deal we looked at a couple of years ago but passed on cause we wanted to ski elsewhere....can't recall which one offhand but it was tempting.....might want to do a search for it.

Might have been the new at that time Comfort Inn near Settlers Green?

another idea too?

BTW don't know the demographics of your family but if you have kiddies along I highly recommend little King Pine.....a fun family blast and still pretty cheap.

If you can ski a clean line down Pitch Pine while staying in the fall line you have game.

In other words, small but not entirely a bunny hill......at least not all of it tho skiing through the pasture like setting on the front side or all the way around the back on Pokey Pine are a beginners delight.

Still the favorite ski memories come from there for my 3 kids...now 26, 23 and 17.

Off topic, but I felt worth a mention.....

We have a 4-year-old boy, so a beginner-oriented hill has something for us.
But King Pine's vertical seems to be less than 1000 feet. That's why we had looked at it but crossed it out on our list.

Watch that area too in the summer time if load up for a trip down the Saco in N. Conway, NH and cross into Maine, to put in. Friends of mine and I have learned Maine's cross border alcohol limit!

Crossing King Pine off your list because of the vertical is a huge mistake, esp if you have wee ones....that being said I am sure you will have a great time wherever you go.

Enjoy.
