Date Hiked:
7.30.05
Trails(s) Hiked:
Davis path
Total Distance:
20+? miles 7000 ft? elevation gain
Difficulty:
A few steep sections but generally just a long hike on a great trail.
Conditions:
Absolutely Perfect. Clear skies, Even the 49 degrees on Washington felt wonderful after these recent humid/windless hikes that wore me out.
Special Required Equipment:
Plenty to drink. There were a couple of spots where some could be filtered from a small stream in a pinch but for the most part the first water without going well off trail is Washington.
Also, try to not leave your camera hooked up to the charger in your living room. It turns out these views can rival any in the Whites and on such a perfect day you'll really wish you had it.
Trip Report:
This actually started out to be a hike to Isolation via Davis path in and out. As it turned out, although It was number 45 for me 40? for Brian and 41? for Andy, Isolation was just one of many hightlights on this trip.
Arrived at the Davis Path trailhead on 302 at about 6:30 am to meet up with people from the other website. Introduced myself to Andy, who had been there for a while already, and started to change clothes. Soon MEB and Little Sister showed up and we introduced. Little Sister had an ironing board in the back of her truck and I asked if she did extreme ironing. She didn't think I was serious and before I got to explain, Bob, Geri, and Brian arrived from having dropped off the return vehicle at Pinkham. This was now a traverse of the Davis Path to Boott Spur and Pinkham Notch Visitors Center!
We started out on the trail at 7:10 only 10 minutes over the start time. This seemed pretty good to me for seven people.
The Davis Path is a wonderful trail and with all of the side trips someone with a camera would be taking it out all day
We did Mts. Crawford, Stairs, and Davis before Isolation. The views get progressively better with each peak.
Somewhere along the way, Mt Crawford I think, someone started talking about adding Mt Washington (I knew I was going to like these people)to the hike to do the entire Davis Path end to end. By Stairs Mt it wasn't a joke anymore and at Isolation Little Sister started obsessing about something called a Woopie Pie.
Since we had spent much just before on Davis we left Isolation after a few minutes (where some people got to take pictures), number 45 for me (I finally had to look to make sure I hadn't forgotten any), and headed towards Washington.
At Boott Spur Andy and Geri turned off and headed towards Pinkham where they would wait for us.
On Washington, I couldn't find a Woopie Pie but I thought maybe I was just looking in the wrong place so I tried the ice cream box. None. Little sister would not be deterred and went and asked them if they would make her one. It turns out they don't make them but they did have more in back and brought them out. To be honest they don't look that appetizing to me but she seemed to enjoy it except the part where MEB took a bite and then grabbed the whipped cream? from the middle.
We left Washington at 5:10 and except for a short pee break and for MEB to point our some landmarks to me as I had never been at this end of Tuckermans before and to stop at the falls, we kept up a pretty quick pace. At the 2 mile mark we picked up the pace and with about a 1/4 mile left we must have been a sight running flat out arriving at Pinkham just before 7.
After the hike 6 of us went to the Mooseland Grill where we met up with HikerBob and got the description of his Owl's Head hike
and his trying to takes pictures of fish as they jumped out to the water
MichealJ was missed as he headed home before Brian got in touch with HikerBob.
After eating and talking some more we parted. Heading south towards 93 and the campground I came as close as is possible to hitting a moose without actually hitting it. I had to dim my headlights for an oncoming car and his lights were distorting my vision as I'm sure my were his. When we were probably less than fifty yards or so of each other I noticed "something" and slammed on the brakes. As soon as he passed I hit the highbeams, still on the brakes, there was moose right in fron of my hood crossing rom my left to right. With him still moving and me still braking I missed it. The "something that I saw in the head lights was legs. A little scarey.
