SMUGGLERS' NOTCH, Vermont — Terrain parks with their various features are not the sole playgrounds of Olympic hopefuls any longer. More and more kids, moms and dads, and recreational skiers are riders are taking their turn at playing in the parks. At Smugglers' Notch Resort they can choose a step-up progression that begins with a modest level of difficulty and leads through several parks towards big air.
New this year is the Jib & Jump Park at Morse Highlands. A box, a rainbow rail, some gentle rolls, a table, and a small half-pipe make this area perfect for trying out all the features in a non-threatening size. Kids 6-15 years old anxious to learn from professionals how to really play in this park can join the new Jibs & Jumps Ski and Snowboard Camp. The day long program focuses on the features of this park where experienced Snow Sport University Guides demonstrate then coach how the kids can take their skills from the mountain slopes and put them into play in the freestyle arena.
For intermediate snow sports enthusiasts the Birch Run terrain park on Sterling mountain is the next step. This 1200 foot long run covers two acres with three rails, two hits, and a half pipe.
The Zone on the Playground trail, also on Sterling mountain, is fitted with six hits and eight rails, all of a larger and more impressive nature than what the other parks offer. Altitude Adjustment events on selected Saturdays throughout the season give participants a chance to show their prowess and win prizes in front of crowds of bystanders. These events take place at the Zone from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.
To maintain these special features in top notch condition for skiers and riders, Smugglers' purchased a Zaugg half pipe groomer. This Swiss-made precision machine creates an elliptical shape in the pipes for a smooth landing. Its maneuverability means other features can be sculpted easily and allows for superb maintenance of Smugglers' terrain parks.
