My trip to JH last season almost cost me my marrige. I left part of my soul there.

A trip to JH actually DID end my marriage in 1990...

But thats another story....

Well thanks for the encouragement everyone. I'm definitely very seriously considering it at this point. As for the recommendations to go to SLC instead, that's all well and good, but the Club isn't offering a trip there for $900. I know someone who has 10+ days a year at JH the last 4-5 years and he said that unlike here in the East, January is prime season at Jackson. Can anyone else confirm?

Once again no one can predict the weather anywhere in Jan. JH is just like any other place, it can have any conditions you can think of. Just go for it!

A few days before you leave, that's when you will know about the condiitons. Where is your group staying?

I would hesitate to call them my group yet (still on the fence) but I think they stay in condos at Snow King. There are around 100 spots available on the trip so I'm not really in a rush to decide. I guess I'll have to wait and see for now.

Nobody can guarantee that January will get you the best snow conditions this year, but historically speaking that is probably accurate. If I recall JH snowfall stats correctly (researched the crap out of JH before I went last year) January is one of their highest snowfall months. But more importantly, its cold in January which helps snow preservation, something that JH has a lot of issues with to begin with. I went Feb 3 to Feb 13 last year - snowed only the first one or two days and then it sucked bigtime. But the two weeks before that it snowed a foot every 3 days. If I had to book a trip to JH months in advance, it would be the 3rd or 4th week of Jan. Probably the highest combination of chance of pow and coverage.

When I was there it hadn't snowed for over a week. But we got blue skies every day and some of the craziest terrain I ever hit. If you like moguls they will have them if it doesn't snow for a while...and they are looooooong runs. The town was great to hang around in and down a few also. I wouldn't miss it for that price.
And here's a deal that I never found anywhere else. We booked an all day lesson for $85.00. What we got was a guided tour of the mountain and some very good tips to help us out. The deal is so good because these instructors know every stash in the place. She found runs for us that we would have never found on out own. If you are up to it line up in the level 8 spot. You will prolly be alone or with a few others. So you get a guided tour all to you're self for 85 bucks plus wahtever tip you give them. Best deal I ever found.

If I were you, I would highly recommend that you DO NOT GO to JH. Stay away from the place. It snows so bad sometimes you can't see more than a few feet. You can never get to see the mountains because of all the snow and fog. Then you fall and you spend hours trying to find your skis in the deep powder. The traverses are real bad with all the up and down and up and down with someone right behind you. Nothing is marked and you can ski where ever you want. There is no control at JH. Its not like east coast skiing where they control everything. Then for food all they have are these all grease burgers at the Cadillac Grill in Jackson with this real rude chef. Bubbas BBQ ain't much better. You got to bring your own beer into Bubbas and then your not allowed to leave with the beer you bring in. Don't get me going about the Mangy Moose not so petite prime rib, Teton Steak House, and the Gun Barrel food. The locals are not friendly at all. The skiing at JH really sucks . Food ain't much better.

Yup if I were you I would NOT go. As for me, I have been going back to JH every year for the last 6 years. :spin:

You forgot to mention that Corbet's couloir is not steep at all and can be skied switch. Even Okemo has steeper runs.

Frigid.

If you like Cold Skiing, you will like Jackson Hole. I knew a woman that went there every year for three weeks. In actuality, I met her in Utah as she also took two weeks there on her long winter vacation. I have never skied J.H., but I did drive up there once from Salt Lake and did the 150 mile trip around Yellowstone on a snowmobile in one day. I slept out the night before and rose at a temperature of 20 below. The views are terrific, the town interesting and the skies often clear. However, I suggest that you bring plenty of warm clothes if you go. Besides, if this is your first year in Vermont, why not take advantage of the local snows and save your money? You have a long life ahead of you. I skied for my Freshman and Sophomore years in New England. Then in my 3rd year, I took time off for a western trip in the summer. I didn't get around to skiing Colorado and Utah until I was thirty, but I've done quite a bit of Utah skiing. Nevertheless, I did ski at Big Bear in California when a Freshman. It was sunny, warm and terribly flat. However, I had a lot of fun and came back with a tan.:flag:

bubbas.... sweeeet... love the joint...
Mangy Moose... Total sausagefest - chock filled with guys with tons of pins on their hats.
But it's a fun place to make fun of gapers :).

Nope... 3 days into a 8 day trip she calls and tells me she's sick of me skiing and wants me to come home.. I look out the window - I see about a foot of fresh on the ground with another few inches on the way..
And I told her I'd have my stuff out of the house within a few days after I got back...

Any alleged "adult" that can not "live without" the physical presence of their significant other for 8 days needs to return to Jr. HS (I think most now call it "middle school"). I have been married 39 years, and we have both taken any number of vacations without each other over the years. We take plenty of trips together, however when our interests don't coincide, then it's "I'll see you next week Luv!" There is an old saying: "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." If it only generates jealousy and resentment, then the relationship either needs to be "repaired" or ended.

Thanks for setting me straight catskills. That sounds like a truly awful experience. Maybe I'll look into a vacation at Wachusett or something instead :p

As for the cold, not a problem. I'm an eastern skier and can't imagine it being much colder than Wilcat, Sugarloaf or Cannon.
