Pulled into the Stateside parking lot around 12 P.M. on after driving 700 miles that morning and the previous day. Took a few warm up laps off the Bonnie Quad and then headed over to the Flyer. Headed down Ullr's and stopped at the entrance to BP to wait for my friend who was snowboarding. Asked if he felt like trying a glade and he said yes so we headed in. This was the first glade that either of us had ever skiied and I'm happy to say I made it out alive. Conditions were mostly scraped off but there weren't too many bare spots or roots sticking out. My friend had to head out because he had a pretty tough time, so I kept going left until I ran into the BBP boundary line and then skiied down from there to the run out. Headed over to the Jet area and made a successful run down Timbucktu and then a few down the Jet. Headed back to the Flyer area and did a few more Ullr's->BP&BBP->Kokomo laps before heading back to the Jay Village Inn at 4. Conditions today were mostly soft with a few bare spots at the lower elevation trails leading back to the lifts, but considering the lack of snow, rain, and warm temps, conditions were fairly good.
Saturday, January 21stWoke up early and got to the Flyer around 8:45. We again repeated some laps down Ullr's into BP&BBP, each time I got better and was able to ski faster and stop less. At about 10 we headed over to the Jet and did two runs down the Jet. My second run was my definitely my best. About halfway down I was leading with right ski and hit a bump. My right ski came down fine, but my left one landed weirded and popped off. Me and the ski went sliding down the hill, with my right ski out in front, desperately trying to brake. Somehow, my right ski acted as a ramp and launched my left ski into my goggles. Could have been much worse, with the only damage being a small dent to my goggles. Headed over to the Tramside cafeteria for lunch and then took the tram up to look around a bit. We ended up back at the Bonnie Quad and as we begin to ride up we noticed fog towards the top of the mountain. As we continued up , the clouds continued to come down and by the time we were at the top of the lift, we could'nt see 20 feet in front of us. We both decided that this was pretty cool and headed down Goat Run to the Flyer. Halfway up the rain turned into light sleet and as we went over the ridge the wind kicked in and the sleet picked up. It wasn't so bad and was actually kind of fun. We continued laps down Ullr's but stayed out of BP due to the low clouds. My friend headed in to the lodge to look for gloves because his were soaked, so I continued on my own. After about my 4th lap on the freezer in the sleet/rain/snow I decided that I had had enough and went back to the Inn. All in all today wasn't too bad. Conditions were soft in the morning, but began to ice up as the day progressed.
Sunday, January 22nd Woke up to crystal clear blue skies and a balmy temp of 9 degrees. Put on an extra layer and arrived at the Flyer at 8:20. The lift didn't start taking people until about 8:45; some mechanic was working on a lift tower. Got up to the top and my friend begins to strap into his board, but nothing happens. I'm standing there watching him attempt to close his bindings, but nothing's happening. All the while I'm watching people fly past me headed for the woods. I finally decided to tell him to go to the liftie and ask if he could ride the lift back down. Finally got into BP and beyond around 9, and for me having never ridden on fresh snow ever, it was pretty sweet. I rode mostly 4-6 inches of new snow on top of scraped off ice for a few runs. Decided to head into the woods between Lower Ullr's and Kokomo to make the run out more interesting. When I got down to the bottom I called my friend who had been having the problems with his board and he told me that he went into the lift shack and the liftie attempted to help him. After a few minutes he said it started working. Liftie's best guess was that one of the springs had frozen up.Spent the rest of the day riding the Flyer up in blue skies and riding BP&BBP in progressively more and more tracked out conditions.
Obviously if I could have picked a time to go to Jay it wouldn't have been this past weekend, but it is the only time of the school year that I have a very long weekend. I'd say that considering the weather leading up to my trip, conditions were very good. And to anyone who is still reading this, sorry for writing so much. I'll have pictures up in the gallery soon.
