Interesting construction photo from Jay

Notice that the tram entrance stairwell is missing. Right now the access to the tram is by an interior stairwell which is used by ski school and ski patrol in the winter.

When the hotel is complete you should be able to almost ski right up to the door. Don't know what will happen this winter since the hotel will be under construction this winter.

Thanks for the photos. That is interesting that they tore down the stairwell...this close to foliage and ski season.

Wow..I wonder how old that building is??? I think it's been 8 years since I've skied Jay Peak..definitely an old school lodge..

They probably had no choice. That entire building needs major work.
Its all part of the Hotel One plans. The building is structurally and physically sound to the best of my knowledge. Its lack of space for its guests is the most glaring concern. Much as I will appreciate the additional lodge space, I will miss the old school look and feel that Hotel One will be replacing.

I can not recall if Jay Peak does foliage Tram rides, but there is another entrance to the tram platform, so that should not be much of a logistical hurdle. Can't really stop construction plans for leaf peepers :)

Great photos. Thanks! Now what will I be able to use to gauge how long the tram line will be?? Bottom of the stairs always meant two trams....

The Tram opened in 1967 which makes it 41 years old. The original cables that the Tram rides on were designed to last 40 years and were just replaced this past summer.

The Tram usually runs all summer from July until October. I usually come up for Columbus weekend and have not noticed any more traffic then then all summer long. The Tram opened this summer in August and is still open with access through the Tram house.

The removal of the staircase was necessary now because they need to get in the foundation in for the hotel before winter and the staircase was in the way. Access for this winter will be through the back stairwell which has an entrance right next to were the stairwell was. I think as far as the line goes, when you see the line coming out the door it will probably be three Trams long.

The renovation of the tram house itself is scheduled to take place next summer. The only change this summer is the removal of the stairwell.

Also removed has been the demo shop, the repair shop and the rental center. No idea where these will be located this winter since their new home in the hotel will not be ready until l the next season.

That's one thing i don't understand now... They're all over the place right now at Jay...

Accessing the tram via the cafeteria makes no sense for winter use... I think they'll do some major ground work and re-install the stairs after...

The demo center, rental and all that... where will they be this winter? No clue at all!

I know they're really behind schedule right now... but i hope they'll be back on track and are able to cope with the coming winter by being ready to operate...

We all agreed last winter that the main lodge's architecture is one of the best thing at Jay as far as the "Jay experience" in concern when you first arrive there... It's sort of travelling through time... I've always loved that lodge... It's a little maze also when you're a kid and you run around it!

And the tram is open weekends for rides to the top... Accessed via the cafeteria is no problem... Not that many people to check out the turning leaves!

(oh yeah... Mountain biking soon?)

The access is not really via the cafeteria. There is an entrance to the rear stairwell right next to the old stairwell, which has always been used by ski patrol and ski school. When you go in this entrance you never go in the cafeteria. I hope they will block access from the cafeteria to avoid people jumping to the front of the line.

From what I have seen of the plans for the hotel I don't think there is any way they will replace the stairwell.

The access is not really via the cafeteria. .

Yeah but those stairs connect to the cafeteria with no doors... At lest i think... It's a pretty wide staircase... but then you're inside a dark staircase while waiting for the tram... Doesn't make sense... It's going to be so humid in there... Forget putting your goggles back on after this!

I don't remember seeing anything about that... all the perspectives and plans i've seen didn't pop anything into my head about the staircases...

Oh well!

This is a view of the finished Hotel. The bottom is the concrete foundation which will backfilled. Over against the Tram there is a concrete floor, on top of the walls, extending up to the Tram entrance, which will enable you to ski right up to the entrance. The new ski rental shop is under this area exiting below.

From this view you can see there is no exterior stairwell and I don't see a temporary one being built.

Interesting stuff!

Confusing... Are they getting rid of the pizza place also by filling all of this up?

What happens to the side entry door for this season? Filled up? Tram access?

Wow, looks like they are bringing in A LOT of fill to be able to allow skiing right up to the Tram door. The Hotel will hopefully block some wind while waiting in line. That will be impressive when it is done. Looks like some potential places to drop off of large retaining walls too :)

As BigJay pointed out... "Yeah but those stairs connect to the cafeteria with no doors... At lest i think... Forget putting your goggles back on after this!". Waiting in an interior stairwell is going to suck. At least the tram stairwell was open to the outside to allow hot wet skiers to evaporate a little moisture.

I don't know about bringing in fill. It looks to me like a retaining wall at the edge of the tram building and a new facade at the lower level of the tram building. The elevation of the front of the new hotel may end up higher than the orginal grade by using the spoil out of the basement excavation.

Jay has announced what they are doing this winter for tram access. From the Jay Web site:

TRAM ACCESS
The new Hotel will immediately abut the western end of the Tram Haus and, as a result, we’ve had to dismantle the existing stairwell. While Veep of Construction and Development Jake Webster has offered his amply broad shoulders to help with transport, we’ve decided to go a different route. Our team of hammer swingers are already underway in constructing a, what you might call somewhat covered stair system that will be on the eastern side of the Tram Haus. It will complete with actual stairs and handrails-just a few of the amenities you’ve come to expect from us.

I guess BigJay was right. To access the Tram from the inside stairwell didn't make sense. I think these stairs are on the opposite side of the Tram and will bring you up to the Tram deck next to the cafeteria deck.

For more info on the new configuration this winter see Jays Web Site. The rental / repair / demo shop will be in a trailer behind the hotel and they are talking about new parking shuttles.

One of the initial thoughts was to run people inside but, as Big Jay pointed out, humidity and the general sense of dread we thought would exist sort of pushed us, and our thoughts, back outside.

I was at Jay yesterday, no issue with the Tram entrance, it's pretty much the same as it was, just on the other side of the building. And if the lines at the bottom of the stairs, it's still two Trams.
