Jay will be holding a forum, similar to the one when Jay was sold, about development of Stateside inviting a select few to participate.

From their Blog:

Well by yours, we mean ours I guess. Talking about Stateside. For the unwashed, we’re referring to the Stateside of our area—the local’s squat that has, for most of measured time, stayed unremarkably beautiful despite it’s obvious misgivings; the true warts-and-all character of Jay Peak most often aligned with things like drafty windows and lovingly, if lead painted, canary yellow picnic tables. Full of equal parts soul and squatters, Stateside will shortly be undergoing a redevelopment that we are asking all those, so inclined, to be a part of.

True to form, we are inviting a select few to be part of the learning experience. As we did prior to building Tram Haus, we are convening a small forum on January 9th to discuss all things Stateside. Our own Walter Elander will moderate, some of management will listen, and you get to talk.

And by you, we mean you-those who demonstrate the desire to inform your future. Our future.

Tell us, by posting here on the Blog, why you should be involved. Why you love Stateside. What needs to change. What should remain, if at all possible, untouched. We will pick 12 folks who will receive nothing more than the ability to crow about helping to redevelop the unredevelopable. We think there’s plenty to enjoy in that particular sense of crowing.

Winners need to be able to spend an entire day, here , on Monday January 9th. By all day we mean, roughly, 10-3. And by January 9th, we mean January 9th. We will listen. We will ask questions and it’s altogether likely we will feed you. If you need more than that for this time well spent, this may not be your cup. For those thrilled with the opportunity to be a part of it, thrill us with your thoughts on why you should be. A part of it that is.

While we will surely not be able to integrate everything you suggest and, in some cases, may ignore you altogether, some of it will definitely stick and that’s what makes all of this, everything about the experience here, great.

Post your thoughts here and we’ll let winners know immediately.

And Happy New Year.

Steve

I participated in the Forum for the Tramside Development. It has been fun to see what they did with it based on the feedback on that group. Personally, I think the Tramside Development has been very well done and I definitely dig that Jay continues to solicit input from their patrons. I'm not available on Monday January 9th so I will not be posting to the blog to request participation. Though I might throw a post up over there just to give a short two cents. As a Stateside baser, I'm excited for Stateside development. I dig the lack of resort vibe at Stateside but there is a difference between classic old school charm and run down. I know they'll do it right for Stateside.

I've only been in the Stateside Lodge a few times but the only time I hit the bathroom, I'm never going back in. It was nasty.

I'm very interested to see what happens with that area.

I get to Jay once or twice a season and the only thing I want to see ticket services resumed for Vermonter passes. Really all I need is a place to park my car and a warm place to put my boots on and have a cupa. I guess better bathrooms couldn't hurt.

Just the same I put in my 2¢. Thanks for posting JPT.

Yeah... those bathrooms get pretty putrid... especially when skiing on a hot day in May lol.

My biggest gripe with stateside bathrooms is lack of elbow room at the pissers. It is really damn uncomfortable to go three across. Actually, I don't even know if I've ever seen it done. I'll duck into the toilets or wait rather than literally rub elbows while trying to take a piss.

Part of the reason I know they'll do it right is because Stateside is just so wrong right now that anything would be an improvement. :D But seriously, they really did do Tramside right. There are bathrooms on the main floor, the bar is awesome, they ditched the faux Austrian theme crapitechure, and incorporated some Jay history into the new place (reusing lift parts for ambiance and decoration, awesome). Its nice without being pretensions. Its accommodating without being huge and honking. It fits the landscape.

I agree. The bathrooms at the Tram Haus are amazing when I'm covered with winter gear and walking with boots on. The carpet is a tad weird but it works. I love Jay because it's close to the border, it's miles better than Mont Tremblant and the feeling of not being pretentious douch bags while staying/skiing there is a breath of fresh air.

I would be happy with just a set of bathrooms, a ticket booth, a sweet patio, and some food. Nothing really else would be needed.

If it gotta come down, might as well have something decent built. My laundry list:

  1. Big stone fireplace (none of this concrete stuff made to look like stone) burning wood -- none of this gas fireplace stuff; Stowe and Saddleback both burn wood in their new buildings.
  2. Bathroom on the same floor as the cafeteria, with high-speed dryers or auto paper dispensers
  3. Minimal use of carpet. Would like to see mainly wood flooring -- something a bit rustic (like Sugarbush has in the bottom floor of the Gate House Lodge); know this might be tough from a durability standpoint. IMHO, all the carpet and wallboard in the Tower Bar mixed with the old chairlift towers and a somewhat formal looking bar looks a bit funny -- would have liked to have seen more of a rustic feel to go along with the old chairlift towers
  4. Cozy bar (again more on the rustic side, e.g. wood paneling, gas lamp type fixtures) with some big COMFORTABLE couches and ottoman chairs -- the chairs in the Tower Bar might look nice to those who designed them, but some chairs are very uncomfortable.
  5. If there has to be stairs, get the pitch right -- going up/down steep stairs with ski boots SUCKS
  6. Big deck w/ BBQ.
  7. Big windows that look out at the mountain.
  8. Lots of parking that is close to and at grade with the building, yeah yeah that means moving the planned State Side Hotel somewhere else. None of this premium parking (or whatever it is called) nonsense where you pay to park closer.
  9. Exterior -- something post and beamish, along the lines of the new Club House and Hotel Jay
  10. Saddleback's Lodge probably comes closest to what I would want to see built, with Sugarbush's Gate House Lodge the second closest. I know it is a bit faux, but I always like the design/feel you get from a Bass Pro Shop. For all that I loathe about Spruce Peak, I thought they did some nice things in the foyer/lobby of the new Stowe Mountain Lodge (fireplace, types of chairs, finishes, etc.) -- just the whole Spruce Peak set-up is way too lavish
  11. Keep it simple. Ski school, rentals, and ski shop can go in another small building, which is tucked away.
Good luck to them!
