This is great news for hockey enthusiasts in our area. Jay Peak Ski & Golf Resort will soon be breaking ground to build a new state of the art NHL size hockey arena. New faciltiy will be 3200 square feet, with rink size of 85'x200' and will include 4 curling lanes, seats for 300 spectators, snack bar with seating for 40-50 people. Rentals will be available for skates, curling and broomball, hockey sticks & pucks. Large locker rooms with showers are planned.
If you have not been to Jay Peak lately it is worth a ride out to view the amazing new Hotel being built over the winter months.
ndoor Aquatics Center. Complete with pools and slides, the Jay Peak Aquatics Center should be underway by the Spring of 2010.
as a hockey player currently traveling across the border and to lyndonville to play,
Speaking of Jay... Anyone else thinks this is a bit ridiculous:
I found it pretty hard to believe that they're also building a water center:
I agree the skating rink is great for the community... but how is it good for "Jay Peak SKI resort"?
I know they want to run a 4-season resort... and so far, nothing came up that would benifit the resort during summer... i find it hard to believe that people will escape from Montreal, Boston and NYC to "the great outdoors" of the Northeast Kingdom and then jam themselves inside to take a swim and do some water slides...
Not only that... Jay Peak area is all about the outdoors... Hiking, Mountain biking, Road biking, swimming in lakes, ponds and streams and camping... I have trouble seing how this gigantic indoor swimming pool fits into the picture...
In these days where "green" is the word and people want to find sustainable ways of doing sports and reducing their impacts on the environement, outdoor sports are the fastest growing activity all over north america.
I'd be curious to see a study about the economic impacts of such installations compare to the Long Trail for example... I'm sure the LT brings in more money from day hikers alone then the indoor pool will bring... even 5 years from now.
Just for costs... Hiking and biking trails cost about 5-8k$ per mile... Let's say you want to build a 20mi network of singletrack, it will cost you somewhere between 100-160k$ to build professionnaly... Over the years, it costs about 5-10k$ on maintenance if you get it all done professionnaly... but then, you can get local groups that will give their time to help grow their local network... I'd be curious to know how much money a skating rink costs... I've seen outdoor soccer fields costing around 250-300K just for getting it built... and maintenance costs are way higher then that!
Anyhow...
Let's face it, Jay has frequent "questionable weather" days that consist of rain/cold/wind that are responsible for confining your average resort destination family to their condo for the day. That does not help breed repeat business.
Sure, during the winter many of the folks that post on this board would still head out and ski/ride no matter the conditions and a few of us will even hike for turns when all the lifts are on wind hold. Meanwhile Joe and Jill condo family are hanging out in their condo with nothing to do. Giving them a few indoor options during incliment weather would be a huge leap for turning Jay into a destination type resort.
Since the Jay cloud continues working during the non-snow months, this senario plays out in the summer as well. Mtn biking in the rain is not good for the trails and it is not fun to play golf in the rain either. Again, having an indoor option that brings in/retains summer guests is a must when the rather frequent, undesireable, weather prevents guests from enjoying "the great outdoors". If 3 out of the 4 days they spend at Jay are washouts, they can still return home happy with the fact they were able to do something other than sit on the couch in a condo for the majority of their vacation (they can sit on the couch at home).
Yeah, i like the way you put things in perspective... I understant being stuck in winter could be pretty bad for normal families...
I still don't see it in Summer... Plenty of things to do while it rains still... and does it really rain for a few days straight in summer? A typical summer... last year was awful!
And golf was needed 10 years ago when the popularity of golf was growing... now, golf courses aren't doing so great... Stowe as said that their golf course was a mistake and loosing money... I hardly see how Jay can make money off it while being further up North...
But thanks for bringing that point of vue in... I like it!
(still not sold on those type of things...)
West Bowl has never "seriously" been talked about and by "seriously" I mean time table and allocation of funds. Stenger has specifically noted that West Bowl is off the table until the current resort and bed base build out has been completed. Them guys are smart, they already have ample terrain and are going to increase four season visits before increasing skiable acres, which is last amongst a long list of things Jay "needs".My only skepticism is that in the past they have bragged about expansion plans that take years if not decades to transpire. They've been talking about the "West Bowl" since 2002. Nothing yet. That golf course? Since the 1980's and it was only opened a few years back. Now maybe the problem was that the previous owners were more interested in it as a cash cow and not interested in investing in it. I've heard that suggested before. So maybe now Stenger can make these things happen sooner.....
I agree....The people up there to mtn bike and golf aren't going to splashing around some water park
True... But the rest of their family will enjoy the hell out of it.
