Looks nice but... eh... I'll never be an SUV person I guess.

The only time I'd ever really use it's main advantage (ground clearance) is really deep snow. Like 18" of soft stuff for a sustained distance. And even with all the skiing I did up north last winter, never needed it, and it was a pretty snowy winter.

I just couldn't give up my S4 now that I have it. 25 mpg combined, 2 very fun turbo's, 13.9 1/4 mile and a permanent smile (that actually begins to hurt it gets so wide taking an on ramp at 55 at the top of second gear).

Pair of nice knobby Dunlop M3 snow's this winter plus the quattro and I'll be able to do anything I need to. I've read on Audi World that 15" is no problem. And if you still need the utility, you can get it in a wagon... but I like sedans. Bring on that winter driving!

I don't buy into the whole build quality was crap under AMC thing. They ran Jeep from the early 70's, and in my opinion produced some of the best Jeeps ever made. Chrysler took over in 87, and well.. we'll just leave it at that..

My Dad owned a 1986 AMC/Jeep Cherokee and it was without doubt the BIGGEST piece of crap car anyone in my family ever owned. The transmission failed when that dog had 9 (nine) miles on the odometer. 9 miles and the tranny breaks down, then it was downhill from there.

I can only speak from personal experience, maybe you have had better luck.

For the record, those Cherokees were not what I was refering to as 'some of the best Jeeps ever made'. ;) I'm not sure what tranny they were using in those, but if it was an auto it may have been a Chrylser tranny. Actually, no it was probably a GM tranny if he had the V6, since for some reason they decided to use the GM 2.8L in the early ones. In 87 they revamped the drive train to use the new 4.0L I6, based on the popular 4.2L used in Jeeps since the 70's.

My experience has been better, but I never owned one that was even close to new (I was 10 when Chrysler took over) so all the bugs are worked out and they're generally expected to have things go wrong when they're 20+ years old. ;)
