Date(s) Skied: Saturday, 12/11/2004, 3 PM-6:15 PM
Resort or Ski Area: Jiminy Peak, Hancock, Massachusetts
Conditions: Wet snow; Rain; FOG
Trip Report: Well, today was a day to (1) feed the ski jones and (2) kick off the season. I had made plans with my brother-in-law to hit Jiminy in the afternoon and evening for some late day/night skiing under the lights. I was a bit surprised when he showed up as the mist was falling in CT.
We figured what the hell, and headed up to Jiminy. We got on skis at 3 PM and kicked off the season on some mush in the fog. Seriously though, the snow was actually pretty nice and Jiminy did a great job providing a pretty solid base on the basically three runs down the West side of the mountain.
Visibility was pretty rough for the top 2/3 of the mountain but it cleared up nicely down at the bottom. We hit West Way/Grand Slam, North Glade/360 and Lower Glade/Slingshot a number of times before taking a Pepsi break at Hendricks at 4:30.
During the 20 or so minutes at the summit, it became fully dark and the next run down West Way/Grand Slam was the run of the night. The daylight glare was gone and the lights did a nice job highlighting the terrain despite the fog. We both commented on how different it was without the daylight washing everything out. It was my first night-skiing run in a number of years.
Psyched after that run, the next was somewhat of a let-down as it started to rain. We skied in the on and off rain for the next 90 minutes and called it at 6:15 PM. Enjoyed a beer and a burger in the warmth of Christiansen's Tavern, and then headed home.
Not an epic day by any means, but it felt good to get out. We also figured that the rest of the season will probably be considered awesome after this soggy start...
