Resort or Ski Area: Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, MA
Conditions: Powder, Packed Powder
Trip Report:
My first time on this mountain, it's a reasonably close 1 hour 20 minutes that makes it perfect for a day trip. Got there just after 8 a.m., by the time I'd trekked from the parking lot to the lodge, bought tickets, booted up etc. it was a half hour later. They'd apparently got an inch of snow overnight, and I saw the snow guns blowing all over the mountain.
Took the Berkshire Express up (nice fast lift!), warmed up coming down North Glade and 360 - very nice soft edgeable snow all the way down. Rode up again and came down Riptide this time, that was very firm with death cookies. Got over to Whitetail which had decent packed powder with just a little powder on the sides; then over to Wild Turkey which was a little more hard packed though still edgeable. These last two trails are nice! I'm a strong intermediate, about PSIA Level 7, and found the black diamonds to have a pretty steep pitch. I wasn't exactly skiing down these with good form, but it was fun nevertheless!
I wanted to take a lesson, it was around 9:40 and I signed up for the 10 a.m. group lesson. Took another run down Upper and Lower Fox, very nice powder and packed powder still! Showed up for my lesson and was the only one in the group (as happens often, works out well to essentially get a private lesson). Had a great time skiing with the instructor, was carving nicely on the cruisers by the end
Grabbed a quick lunch at the Summit Lodge and then made some runs off Widow White's Quad - Noreaster, Panorama, Left Bank etc.; all had small soft powder bumps but still in good shape. Returned to Wild Turkey which was now icy and firm, but North Glade and Upper Lower Fox remained nice especially on the sides. Came down Upper Whirlway to Lower Exhibition where they were blowing a ton of snow - it was lots of powder (a little heavy) but hard skiing with the guns blowing right at you. They were race training on skier's right so we had to stay left even closer to the guns.
Another cruiser or two down West Way / Grand Slam with tired legs, and I called it a day around 2:30 p.m.
I really enjoyed Jiminy Peak - having skid Butternut the week before (also for the first time), I definitely concur with Greg's observation that Jiminy skis a LOT bigger than the stats would suggest. Great mountain, something for everyone, and a decent lift system. I'm planning to return next Sunday with my wife and another couple, hope the conditions stay this way!
