Snowbird Opens Tomorrow!

Hi Guys,

I drove up to Snowbird this morning to pick up my 08-09 "Alta-Bird" season pass. The entire valley is beautifully covered with snow. I decided to run up to to avoid the lines that will doubtlessly form at the ticket office in the Tram Plaza on opening day tomorrow. The Alta parking lot (At Goldminer's Daughter) was about 1/3 full. A lot of people were hiking up and "earning their turns" today. The pictures in the prior post are pretty much what things look like. I wish all you AlpineZoner's a great season, and hope to see some of you out west. Let me know when you are coming, and I will try to "hook up" and share the joy with you.

Looks like a great start but they do need a lot more for good coverage. I'm sure the locals know where to go though!!!

*I think I know where I can get my hands on an ultralight..that might hold two..plus skis & stuff, although we might have to land to refuel every ~30?mi or so..;-)

shit god damn. im going to have to cleen the mess in my pants after that first pic. i would go out but by the time i get there it will all be skied out and its still real rocky.

Yup, impressive dumpage out there is about the equivalent of a 6" base back East. There's a reason why a good deal of Western terrain can't open until 100" or snow have fallen!

The difference between a 100 and a 150 to 200 base is huge. Areas that I normaly hit midwinter can be rocked out early on. I found this out the hard way a few years ago early Jan at Alta.

Did somebody say "Locals?"

Hey Ira, my friend Paul (a transplant from RI), his wife, and I hit the Gadzoom Lift at Snowbird when it opened at 9 AM today. It was awesome! The groomers were still soft and well covered, and the areas near the trails, and also between the trails were nicely covered. We even chanced some stuff where the trees were not too tight and in three hours of skiing (I promised the wife I would get home early, not to mention a bit of "heat" in the legs.) I touched one unanticipated rock. I think the key factor with the current snow, is that it is a bit more "eastern" (i.e., higher moisture content) then we usually get, so it packed a bit tighter then the "dust" we usually get. Great start to what I hope will be a great season. Call me when you plan to come west.
