i saw telegrrl's pic and it made me think. i've wanted to do that trip for years but it seems like a logistical pita. i always figured at least a week: 2 days traveling to and from, 2 days or at least a day and a half in to chimney pond 2 days skiing and a day to get out. for any of you that have been, does that sound about right? and is it worth it? and i've heard the red tape can be a hassle. as far as quality of descents, am i better off just hitting gulf of slides/mt. washington?

In order to get a place at Chimney Pond in the winter there are many hoops to jump through, but the rewards are IMO worth it. Here is the page with all the General Information. Your group must be 4 or more people, you need to send them a list of your experiences in order to get a permit, they will inspect your gear to make sure you have all the right stuff. The reservations fill up early for the bunkhouses at Chimney and Roaring Brook, you will most likely end up in the shelters.

You have to spend a night at Roaring Brook before going into Chimney Pond, but since that is quite a long ski anyways it's not something that will cause you any grief. We spent a day at Roaring Brook on the way out as well, but it is not required.

Not sure how full things are for this winter. I think if you are willing to go for the shelters you stand a good chance of getting a spot at Chimney Pond when you want. If you have a desire to go this winter, I'd call now and send in your application ASAP. It's an amazing place in winter.

David gives very good advice :p

Allocate at least two days for your summit bid. The weather at Chimney Pond can be just as unpredictable as the weather at Mount Washington.

My avatar picture was taken at -48*F, virtually no wind chill to factor in either. The coldest temps I've ever been exposed to. I had on all my gear and wished I had more. This year I'm going back in early February armed with down clothing for every part of my body :D :D

Good luck in your quest. Baxter is well worth the red tape.
