Won't work...we still go to church too, thanks to Saturday afternoon Mass...

Actually we do too..

Reason I asked about ages and fitness.. was to get a baseline...

Once they start to get teenage years, its tough to get them to swing around to your way of thinking..

As other posters said, be gentle with them and don't force them into anything.

After all - you love them very much, that goes without saying...

They just have to go through their "thing" - like we all did......

you know there is a severe childhood obesity problem.

For sure..when I was in elementary school there was like 2 fat kids and now there are alot but some kids just like to sit and eat cheesy poofs..

When I was a kid, my mom used to just say,"OK GrilledSteezeSandwich go out and play and be back at 6PM" so I did rollerhockey/rollerblading or jumped off curbs with a pogo stick..I wish they had youtube back then.

No you didn't. You're fat.

I'm not as fat as I was a month ago!!!..and I exercised alot as well..we had to run the mile in 5th grade and it took me 10 minutes..now my fat ass could do it in 6.34..maybe even faster if I was being chased after by a bear..and 2 miles would take me 15..lol

My daughter like others have said likes skiing but also likes her social life. My mother lives in the area and we never forced her to go on family ski trips so she stayed home a couple of times. But she still came on many (and all of our western trips). My wife once asked her "How long did she think she would continue to go on trips with us.?" She said "As long as you go someplace interesting".

And... "interesting" is...... The "S" WORD*

* "shopping"
ewwwwwww!

I watched alot of TV growing up and I turned out fine..:blink:When and if U ever have kids, if they want to go skiing with me, that's cool and if they want to sit at home and watch cartoons, that will be cool as well.

My son could sit home and play video games or watch TV all day if I let him and sometimes I'll let him do it too long if I'm busy around the house. If I ask him if he wants to go skiing with me he'll turn off whatever he's playing or watching to hit the hill.

Don't push them, but sounds like you know that. Sounds like your son is easier to get back into the sport. What do you guys normally ski? If it's typically just groomers, try getting him into bumps or tree skiing, or something else. At 16, if you can get him doing stuff that he figures will impress people watching, he'll probably be more into it. The whole teen male ego thing.

Still gets me at 24.

NIIIICE!

Back to fat kids, i'm amazed at the number of them.

We were at this place called Great Escape a few weekends ago. Its essentially a huge McDonalds play land on steroids. Huge tube slides and ball pits and the such. Anyway, i'd bet half the kids there were at least midly overweight and a few i feared would actually get stuck in some of the tubes. Its totally the parents fault.

somewhat on topic, i dont think you can push your kids to get involved in a particular sport. If they arent into it, thats it. Teenagers definitely need prodding, it seems like, these days but as long as they know they cant just sit around eating pizza, doritos and outback takeout, they should be fine. Jea!

My son did the ski program this year but none of his friends ski, so I head over to Wachusett on Monday evenings to do a few runs with him...nice excuse to leave a bit early on a few Mondays.

Jack97, haven't I seen you on the self-improvement circuit ...on tube @3am..:lol::lol:

......Just don't force them to have fun (or atleast let you have fun in their presence), because even if they choose to take a few seasons off, 98% of the time they will come back to it, and thank you for getting them started!

*EDIT: per MarkC...
telemark....might add in a "maybe a few days of XC instruction... sometime..

I think mountains with gentle meadow stretches = safe medium-radius turn mgmnt(Not steeper-pitched, bumped up.. short radius terrain..ever present in smaller mtns) is where they can learn to let the skis do the arcing. I think one often has to feel that little bit of arcing + rebound(quad/glute action) to get the endorphins kicking in. *EDIT: Letting them spend time on their own(or make sure they can't see you watching!..;-)) = great...I see soooo many parents that just push, and push..you can't believe it when you see/hear it..

I hate to mention it.... this past monday, my daughter and I spent the whole day at Sunapee. She wanted to go there b/c of the moguls. We tried the little field at Chipmunk and she didn't like it b/c it was icy. We then went to lift line and lapped it all day, the bumps were soft and she was having a blast. As powbmps mentioned they cover it with manmade over the weekend and it held up nicely till monday.

I never pushed her into skiing moguls, matter of fact we introduced moguls to her at bretton woods and she always enjoyed them. My whole approach when skiing with her as well as my wife is to go when the conditions are great, both are the type that hate hard pack nor go on trails that look intimidating.

I've got some push back this year as well. The twins (nine y.o.) started to whine when we'd go to MRG on Sundays. After a few times of this I just decided to leave them home. They go to SB with the school on Fridays and this seems enough for them. My older son (13) is just as happy to have me leave his annoying brother and sister at home as well as be able to ski more of the challenging terrain.
