2006 Trip Report #: 55
Resort: Killington
Conditions: VC/SC/WS
Weather: Sun and clouds. Some wind. Temps in the 60's.
Trip Report: Back for another great spring day at Killington, although today was more like a summer day. It was a day to ski some of the lesser known stuff that I had not gotten to at all this season or had never skied before. My "Black Diamond Tour" took me to some of Killington's coolest old school terrain! Yes, it does exist...you just have to look for it.
Got to Bear Mountain at 10:45 or so and walked to the deck. As I was booting up, someone recognized me, despite my standard issue Charlie Chaplin Glasses (AZ witness protection gear  ). It was Powhunter...I had skied with him on Friday, just did not recognize him We got onto Skye Peak Quad and headed out.
First run was down a very soft and entertaining Skyeway to Bittersweet. Wow. Amazing. We lost John (soon to be an AZer), but Josh, Powhunter, and I hit Superstar Quad and then Skyehawk Headwall, which was in great shape.
From here we decided to head back to Bear to see if we could find John, so we took Gateway to Great Eastern and then down an amazing Wildfire. Lower Wildfire was starting to go...some streams forming, but doable.
No luck finding John, so we decided to head back out....only Powhunter dropped his glasses on the lift, so we skied Skyeburst to the bottom. I hit Viper Pit which was nice, but the snow was getting a bit too heavy. Not a problem...time to scoot over to another area.
Josh and Powhunter took a break and I struck off for Snowdon with North Star on my list. I skied Skyelark to Skyebits and then slogged over to Snowdon. No lines, great snow. Vagabond looked interesting, so I hit that. Very cool...like something out of Burke or maybe MRG. Quiet, nice bumps, and with some character. North Star was more entertaining...with perfect bumps and nice solitude...with a downed tree thrown in
It was time to head back for lunch, so I took K-1 and spoke to a guy who had Head IM70's and used to work at Strand's (where my boots were from).
Next call was down South Ridge--Blue Heaven to the Jug and Jug Handle. All were narrow and fun...nobody on them at all. Jug Handle was reminiscent of Pico's Summit Glades and A Slope. The snow on Falls Brook was a bit heavy, but I made it.
After lunch, I had a plan to hit the remaining diamonds. Dream Maker Headwall was next...one of the last skiers of the season I'm sure. I then cut over to Superstar and hit Ovation Headwall and Old Superstar. Lower Superstar was nice. Tons of snow on Skye Peak...except Lower Ovation.
I jumped over to ski Thimble and then cut back on Bittersweet to K-1. Was thinking of doing Catwalk-Double Dipper and then into South Ridge, but I was just too tired, so I closed by doing Catwalk to High Traverse, which dumped me in the right place. I then hit Roundabout...wow. What a cool trail. Something out of Burke for sure! Narrow and tight. Nice snow. I had just enough power to get out of Falls Brook and back to the base.
Amazing day. If I had more time and energy, I would have done Breakaway and Double Dipper, but another day I guess.
It was great skiing with Powhunter again. He is a great guy and a great skier. Josh is a great boarder as well. Next outing: Sunday??? We'll see....
