This whole thread got me to thinkin..

Does Killington gank passes for closed trails and the such?

Officially the policy is if your caught on a closed trail, the ticket/pass is gone.

Unofficially, your much more likely to get a couple of words about safety issues from a patroller if they catch you and your pass stays.

the reaction is overblown of course
hiking for man-made is certainly a different game than natural.
If POWDR was smart they would have just opened. Nothing wrong with them asking to stay away from the snowmaking and grooming efforts besides they should know better than to throw more gas on the fire.

Yes they can. The pass is not to use the trails or the land that they do not own. It is to use the chairs that they do own. So you poach, get caught, they yank the pass. You can continue to do that just not use the chairs.

This idea that just because it's state land that kmart leases, in this case CCSF, doesn't mean you have automatic access anytime. This time of the year most resorts have requested that people stay off the trails.

In the spring due to mud the state closes many of the high elevation trails until the mud dries off on state land. They don't have police there stopping you but there are signs that the trail is closed. It's your choice whether you hike it or not. If you of a mindset that thinks "that sign is for everyone else but not me", so be it.

They don't want you up there for safety reasons. If people hike up and, god forbid, someone gets hurt it screws it for everyone. Whether it's Green Mountain National Forest or CCSF(kmart) or MMSF(Stowe) safety to the public is an important part of the leases. It might disaffect their insurance, their permits to use the land and increase their costs. Most of the big resorts have private security firms and they would have to increase that, if too many hike to the goods, to prevent stupid people from being stupid.

Here at the Bush as many of you know, the Slide Brook Basin is a bear sensitive area. We are required to have signs posted at the popular access points during the summer. If the GMNF does a check and they find a bunch of people in there then they will come down on the resort and possibly disaffect our permits for use of the land. If mountain bikers are found on the summits, where they are not allowed per the GMNF, the Bush could lose the permits to have mountain biking in the GMNF part of our mountain biking trail system.

Again, the idea that just because it is public land you can access anytime you want is incorrect.

BTW, it's not theft of service if the resort is not open.

I know the ENTITLEMENT that people would want to actually be able to utilize STATE land is an absolute abomination. What a bunch of complainers, I mean the people who are hiking are stealing Killington's snow!!! I don't care if they're staying off of the trails that have snowmaking on them and are skiing the 2-4" of natural snow that fell, Killington OWNS that because they own the land!!

Pay no attention to that state document describing the terms and conditions of the lease, one of which is that the rights of ingress and egress of the general public to the land leased to Killington shall be protected. The nerve of some people is just incredible, they are actually ASKING a company to HONOR the terms of an agreement? An agreement that allows them to operate a business on State land that has the potential for tremendous profit, while contributing very little back to the local community(at least in the interim). The temerity of some people! The state police should be sent out to arrest those folks who are hiking for blatant and willful theft of services

I mean the Vermont statute CLEARLY indicates theft of service is: A person who purposely obtains services which he knows are available only for compensation, by deception or threat, or by false token or other means to avoid payment for the service.

These people are obtaining a service without paying for it!!! They are using deceptive means like hiking to avoid paying the full rate, why just the other day I saw someone threaten a non-existent Killington manager with an ice ax in order to get a ticket that is needed to hike!!!! This weekend these people are obtaining a service for which they should be paying for, and Killington should charge them for it, the fact that Killington doesn't plan to open to charge for such a service is irrelevant to this argument.

next topic:-?

CLEARLY, i think a lot of people missed the simple fact that they asked you not to ski it. They didnt TELL you not to ski it. what's the big deal? If you dont want to heed their request, dont. Go ahead and hike for the 300 vert feet of frozen, choppy goodness available on rime.

If I follow you're logic I can't ski Pico because Powdr has requested that turn earners stay away until opening day

they were not specific to the mountain

Actually here is the EXACT quote from The Drift : "Our snowmaking crews are working around the clock to build base depths on the upper sections of Killington Peak as we prepare for opening day on Friday, November 16. Currently, we’re making snow on Rime, Reason, Double Dipper, Rim Run and Great Northern as we are working our way down to the K-1 base.
With hundreds of snow guns, high-pressure hoses, snowmobiles, snowcats and heavy equipment moving about the mountain, maintaining a safe working environment for our staff is the number one priority. As a result, we respectfully ask that those seeking to “earn their turns” refrain from doing so until opening day."

NO mention of my Pico suggestion, just a request to stay off where they're working.
