Woke up this morning in Rutland, looked out the window and saw that it had been raining. Check weather.com, Killington's site and in both cases see temps of 40 degrees. Weather.com states that no more rain and temps would be going down to freezing. The way I look at it, that's not bad. Guess what, park the car, get on a trail, and it's all ice! My wife decided she's not going to ski, told me to go ahead and she would wait in the lodge. Ok, I had made plans to meet up with Kingslug so figured I'll ski. Met the slug, went got my truck, drove it over to Ramshead where my wife was at. Loaded up her skis and went to meet Kingslug.
We head over to the Gondola wait for Skidork, no show. Took the gondi up and start skiing down Great Northern. I ask Slug if he wants to do Cascaded, he's easy. Get down to Cascade, closed, go on to Uppere East Fall, take that down to the North Ridge Triple, closed. Ski down East Fall, icy, but doable. With conditions being what they were,, I tell Slug, let's head over to Bear, he's easy. We get to Bear, it starts snowing, We take the OL lift up, and it's a freaking snowstorm, yeah!!!!
Try Bearclaw to Wildfire, nice! Soft bumps, some ice, but plenty packets of powder as well. Back up do Wildfire down, nice, soft bumps and snow. Killed my quads, figure, I need a rest so I tell the Slug, let do Outer Limits. Top was very windblown, nothing but ice, but as you go lower and lower, the snow got better and better. We did OL a couple of times, for me it was ROTD, Slug wasnt' crazy about it, guess my edges were a bit sharper
We then head over to the Needles area, nice, but not quite what I'm used to, so we head back to Bear, few more laps here and there and then about 2 I decide to call it a day. We head across to Skype, against our better judgement head over to Superstar, there were very few people coming down that trail all day. We found out why, it was a freakin skating rink! We got on it right after the headwall, that wasn't bad, but when we hit final steep section, well, let me put it this way, there was no such thing as an expert skier on that run today. The only people on it were peopl with a deathwish.
Overall though, can't complain, had a great time skiing with Kingslug, Bear was a lot of fun. Killington is usually pretty good with getting the mountain in shape, today just couldn 't blame them. I could see how the timing of rain and freezing temps would have been very hard to work with.
