Date(s) Hiked: Carter Dome Aug. 4 2004

Trails(s) Hiked: Loop-19 Mile Brook, Carter Dome, Carter-Moriah, 19 Mile Brook Trails

Total Distance: 10.4 miles

Difficulty: I never noticed any.

Conditions: Absolutely perfect.

Special Required Equipment: A quick wit.

Trip Report: I met my hiking partners at the 19 mile trail head. When I say “met”…I mean it. I had never hiked with them before and was a little anxious about it. Not to worry faithful readers, my hiking partners showed up early and in full good natured spirit. I liked both of them right away and now understand why so many of you speak highly and affectionately of hiking with MntMagic and Ghostdog. Unfortunately, MntMagic hadn’t sleep well for having nightmares about his hiking partner falling from the pin steps on Wildcat. He felt much better about just hiking Carter Dome and his partner Ghostdog was all in favour of it as well. Sometimes it’s serves no purpose to tempt fate.
Off we went on 19 mile trail, the temperatures were cool, the sun was shining and the laughter wasn’t far behind. I can not explain any trail conditions to you this time as I was completely engaged in humorous conversations for most of the journey. I do remember a lovely brook with cascading water and numerous pools. Before I knew it we had reached the Carter Dome junction where we had the fortune to meet a NOBO. A feisty man with an impish gleam in his eyes. MtnMagic and this 82 year old NOBO were quickly bantering between themselves and I stood there shaking my head and chuckling. When MtnMagic and the ancient one were done, we continued on until we chanced to meet two more NOBO’s. Two young men with stories to tell and MtnMagic wanted to hear all of them. I even learned a thing or two. It was truly a fun conversation to listen to and participate in. I understood this to be the MtnMagic way of hiking. After a few more funny stories and some uphill hiking we had reached the summit of Mt. Height. The three of us took in the outstanding, 360 degree views and rested out of the wind. It was spectacular. We could absolutely see forever from there. We had a lunch date with Carter Dome and after a little map orientating for my benefit, we moved on. One need not "push on" with MtnMagic, simply move on will do.
The trip to the dome is a blur as well, a blur of words and laughter. If you’ve been there you know there is no view from Carter Dome summit. You can find one on some of the trails leading from the summit but nothing could beat what we saw from Height so we were quite content to sit a spell and have some lunch. I can not convey how perfect the weather was, after having been cheated out of good views and decent weather on my last few hikes, I was thrilled to be relaxing in warm sunshine with cool breezes and the summit to ourselves. Ah……………… paradise!
MtnMagic humored my desire to grab another patch for my collection and we headed for the Carter Notch Hut after a very pleasant lunch break. Never in all my years have I heard one man ask so many questions! The three people in the hut that were paying attention soon found themselves in the rapid fire, good natured whirlwind of a “magic” conversation. Again, all I could do was watch, listen, shake my head and chuckle. We had to leave only because it would be dark soon, so we made our way back down the trail in the same fashion we had come up, walking and talking. I inquired as to how MtnMagic was feeling, he had mentioned some soreness in his knee on the extremely steep decent to the hut, his response was “I am content”. This statement summed up to total of the day, as I felt completely the same way.

Here’s to you Magic and Ghostdog  and another great day. Feel free to add whatever I may have missed.

Note: I hiked up to Thompson Falls before this hike and added the Wildcat stamp to my collection.

I've been up there 6 times ... I love that area! I think nothing beats the moment when you break out into the open on the descent from the Dome into the Notch, on that piece of ledge just below the side trail to Pulpit Rock. I'm glad you had a great hike and enjoyed Carter!

Oh, you are so right! I seriously thought it was a straight  drop off, from a few feet back, when we reached that opening above the hut. Another you can see forever view, without a doubt. The talus field was incredible from that vantage point but the "pulpit" looked so much bigger from porch level. Wished I had binoculars to check out the "ton o caves" up the mountain behind the hut too.

Next time you visit there, go past the hut a bit and you'll see a side trail labelled "The Rampart". That's that huge rock fall. It's traversable with jumps and great caution, and is an incredible vantage point from which to look out across the Wild River Valley. You can even climb up some of the fall up the side of the Dome.

Ghostdog bagged her 45th. Dirt_girl bagged another two 4k's, albeit only the Dome is on the 48 4k list. I got to return to see the stunning 360 degree views from Mt Hight (4,675') that you readers should see for yourselves. I purposely didn't bring my camera and certainly wished I had. The hike to both summits is a very moderate ascent with a total elevation gain of only 3,600'.

In the group of two NoBo's A.T. hikers that left Springer, GA in February, one started out with his weight at 250 pounds and had dropped 50 pounds by Zeta Pass. How cool is that! The solo man at a young 82(!) had a zest for the outdoors and the A.T.'s 2172 miles that I'll always share with hikers during our trail talk.

Carter Notch is magnificent with it's large talus field from portions of both of the summits of Wildcat (4,422') and Carter Dome (4,832'). Both Big and Little Carter Lakes have a beauty that must be seen to experience the ambience.

The self-service hut sleeps 40 and only costs $20 a night. Hikers bring their own food and use the facilities to cook meals. At an elevation of 3,288' the walls of mountains rise so amazingly steep above.

This is by far a less traveled area than many other parts of the Whites to its South and a delight to behold. Just another great day to hike on two of the spectacular Carter-Moriah Range Mountains!

Yep it's that time of the year when the NOBO's are making their way through. They are always great for sharing stories of their adventures. It's amazing how fit they seem to be.

Mt. Hight far and away has the best views on this ridge and Carter Notch Hut is always a favorite hangout spot. (Perhaps a planned out Future trip is in order)

DirtGirl, you should have asked MtnMagic about the vise grips story. It's worth the stomach cramps you get laughing

What a riot, thanks for the great laugh Cal! (Inside joke.) Yes, I'll try to remember to share the story to all I hike with.

SilentCal, I was in stiches for most of this hikeas it was! My trip report so sucked on details because of it but I've never had more fun. My ribcage was sore the next morning but my knees didn't bother me a bit...what does that tell you? Thanks SC, I will be certain to remind MtnMagic on the next hike, to tell this story.
