OK, so if you read my post over in skiing discussions, you may have seen I just picked up new Legend 8000's.

For those of you with experience on these boards, where you you mount them? Centered? or 1cm forward?

greg was quick to the gun on this issue, heh! though i am not 100% sure of where the default mounting position for the current year's model is, i am 99% sure it is the same as the late model 04/05 ski. if you have last year's model (04/05) you can tell if it is an early or late model by looking at the dynastar logo near the tip. if the logo is all silver, the mounting position is ideal for eastern tree skiing and quick turns. if the logo is black within the silver, you may want to mount 1-1.5cm forward of boot center if you prefer quick turns and trees. if your tendency is to groomers, the later normal position will suffice.

Thanks guys. These are 04/05. River, if you mean the silver badge with the word "Dynastar" just forward of the 8000, then mine is all silver. So, I am assuming that the boot center mark to the mark on the ski is where they should mounted. I did read the article greg linked to and Steve said for the these skis center is the way to go. So I think I will get them mounted that way. Thanks again!

yup, that is what i would recommend! i was baffled by the different mount point of the new model! i was not aware of the change until after i mounted a new pair and noticed a significant difference in the skis' performance. i suspect the move was made for folks who either love groomers or ski powder out west. the more rear ward mounting point would probably make for a better big carve turn and better float on powder, but makes the ski less nimble and quick from my experience.

dynastar is no stranger to weird mounting issues. the dynastar inspired big/nobis inspired (same as 8800) had a very centered mounting position, perhaps because of the up turned tail they thought the ski would be bought by kids in the park? but it is totally a big mountain ski and most people mount that one backwards 1.5cm i believe.

since this issue has come up, i have done a lot of research into mounting points. it BLOWS MY MIND that this has not become a larger issue in the ski world. the fact that we customize boots so much but pick a universal and arbitrary mounting position for all people of all shapes and sizes is mind boggling. there are alternative mounting systems, most often employeed by tele skiers from what i have read online. i looked into the ball of foot method and it didn't look right when i lined it up at home using various measuring points of that method.

i have since begun playing around with mounting point slightly, most recently having a slight issue with a mount when a ski shop tech misunderstood when i said 1.5cms and he went 1.5 inches  off the mark.
