Date(s) Skied: March 12-14, 2009
Resort or Ski Area: Les Arcs, France
Conditions: two-day old powder, packed powder
Trip Report: Another one of those "better late than never" posts.... I found myself in the French alps for work in mid-March, which isn't too tough, I know....Les Arcs is one of the French purpose-built resorts, meaning it's not particulary picturesque, but it's not horribly ugly like some others (see, for example, Les Menuires in the Three Valleys). Interestingly, Intrawest recently developed one of their villages (Arc 1950) in the Les Arcs area (I didn't stay there - I stayed at Arc 1800, one of the older developments).
The skiing is a mixed bag. There are some interesting and fun slopes spread around the resort, but there's far too much traversing to get from place to place. Also, the lift infrastructure isn't up to par with some of the other large European areas. From what I gathered, it's a good place for beginners and low intermediates, however. Just don't expect much in terms of things to do besides skiing.
The views of Mont Blanc, though, are quite stunning....And proximity to La Plagne (Les Arcs and La Plagne are linked, forming Paradiski) makes for an insanely huge combined ski area (I didn't have time to check out La Plagne). Also, from high up the mountain, you can see the tram towers on Tignes, which is connected to Val d'Isere.
