Looking to be coming up to somewhere in New England from northern NJ in Jan.

Need some help with various things form people in the know as my only experience of NE is 1 day at K in November and everyone else hasn't been in years.

Looking for.

1 - No further than 5 hours from northern NJ
2 - Good for both boarders and skiers.
3 - Decent terrain park but nothing too crazy. Mostly the 13 yo that'll be in it although I'll give it a shot.
4 - The cheaper the better really but don't want to go somewhere cheap just because of that.
5 - Don't really mind being a bit away from the mountain but would be good to be close
6 - May be 4-5 people, may be 8-9. One 5 year old, everyone else has skied/ridden plenty before.
7 - We're used to sliding in Jersey and Scotland. In Scotland, the piste basher does the uptrack for the tows and that's about it so ungroomed/slighlty icey conditions shouldn't be a huge problem!
8 - That's it. Cheers. All help appreciated, don't care if it's biased.

Catskills, NY would be a coupla hours ride max. Hunter, Windham, Belleayre are 3 in that neighborhood.

Sorry,meant to add another point.

Not too crowded on the weekend if possible as a few of the party will only be able to be there Sat and Sun. They've said that 5 hours is a decent journey for them to do Fri night and Sun night. As far as I've heard the Catskills can get mobbed weekends from NYC/NJ?

tell me how to do it and you can have some Glen Coe and Glenshee pics from last year along with "fingers crossed" some Cairngorm/Nevis ones from this coming weekend

When you reply, scroll down to "manage attachments" in the "Additional Options", "Attach Files" , then "Browse" your HD for the pix and upload.

Here we go, hopefully?

Notice the complete lack of trees and NO snow on the chairlift on the way up. Think the last photo's my favorite!

By the way,Glen Coe is about the same elevation as Killington etc. but is windy as F***!!

Will they keep us entertained for 5 days?

As far as terrain is concerned? They are both good sized mtns, unless you are a top expert or like to ski only trees you'll be fine. They are also not too far from one another and you could day trip to the other as well as Stratton (pricey), Magic (only if conditions are good), and Killington.

Halo! Ciamar a tha thu?

I suppose it's a little farther than you'd like to travel (probably 5.5-6 hours), but I have to recommend Sugarbush Mt. Ellen. Fits the bill nicely for you. A wide variety of terrain choices (groomed and natural), plenty of snow, two decent terrain parks, and certainly affordable for what you get (if you buy Mt. Ellen tickets). There are some nice places to stay close by that are reasonably affordable. Glad to provide more details if you'd like.

Thanks for the help. I'd actually looked at Sugarbush as well, actually I've checked out pretty much everywhere in VT over the last week or so as I have nothing better to do with my time! I priced Sugarbush and checked the mileage, mapquest told me 5 hours so any info/experience you have of the place would be great.

Thanks

Well, I have lots of experience and info. I've logged over 250 days at Sugarbush in the past three years, and I've worked in 4 departments at the mountain!

What would you like to know about specifically?

Some general info:

Big resort. If you bought all-mountain passes, you would have access to 508 skiable on-piste acres, and thousands of off-piste fun. 111 trails, 16 lifts (five detachable quads), 2600 vert. At Lincoln Peak, you'll find the resort accommodations, including luxury lodging and fine dining, along with a beautiful brand new base lodge. At Mt. Ellen, you experience more of the traditional ski "area" feel. If you buy Mt. Ellen tickets, you will have access to the full 2600 vert, along with around 40 trails and 200 skiable acres. Mount Ellen offers a nice mix of wide cruisers, classic skinny New England trails, and some serious steeps. A little something for everyone. The base area is much more basic and quaint. Just a base lodge, essentially. But it is, in its own right, and entire ski area. It has all of the amenities you would need to enjoy a day of skiing: base lodge, mid-mt lodge, 7 lifts, cafeteria, ski school, etc. Mt. Ellen tickets are quite affordable, but the prices are not up online yet since Mt. Ellen doesn't open until 12/19.

Any specifics you'd like to know about? I'd be glad to show you around for a couple of runs!
