Okemo can get quite crowded during the weekends (half of Connecticut will be there). Personally, I get bored skiing there after one day, let alone 5.

Have you looked at Burke Mountain (maybe someday, someone who asks for resort recomendations on this message board will actually take this one )? It is roughly 5 hours 15 minutes from N New Jersey. Not as big as Sugarbush but has a very laid back atmosphere.

Sugarbush is a great option as well.

I'd say Killington is a pretty good option as well. Lots of terrain to keep you occupied for 5 days, plus your ticket is good at Pico as well. (10 minutes down the road). Tickets aren't cheap, but lodging is, and they do have some good lift/lodging combo deals as well.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm going there on Jan 3 of 2009. I can't wait!

Mapquest says 6 hours + from my address. Bit far I think especially as both drives have to be in the dark, don't fancy overdoing it in a snowstorm!

Leaning more towards K or Sugarbush I think as K is massive and Sugarbush looks far enough away from NYC to keep crowds down a bit.

Cheers folks, keep the ideas coming! In other news we're supposed to get 1 ft+ of snow tonight in the mountains over here if some forecasts are correct. Looks like I'm getting a day on the hills on Saturday!

Stratton/Magic have affordable lodging, plenty of restaurants, and other things to do. Go to Magic if it snows (when are you going again)? Stratton is really known for its parks. Bromley is also close by and Okemo is in striking distance. Unfortunately, Stratton does have tons of uncomfortable 6-pack lifts.

Are you a Celtic fan? Why can't they win on the road in Europe?

No, I am NOT a Celtic fan. They are one half of the most vile and hateful institution in world football. All their success and money has been based on centuries of religious hatred between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland and the West of Scotland and I hate both Rangers and Sellick. The reason Celtic canny win away in Europe is because they are very mediocre and are used to getting every refereeing decision going when they play in Scotland.

I'm a Heart of Midlothian fan by the way, best team name in world football. We're sitting third just now so doing no too bad.

Going Jan 13th/14th till the 18th/19th but need to be somewhere that's not gonna be too stupidly busy over the weekend which I think is MLK day or something? Will need to decide sometime fairly soon to get a half decent deal I think, leaning towards, Mount Snow, Sugarbush or Stratton I think due to the choice of condos and hotels. Any more help after my wee rant at the Old Firm?

Sugarbush (especially Mt. Ellen) will be substantially less crowded than Snow and Stratton for MLK.

Any other info I can give?

BTW, I'm going to Scotland in May. Anything fascinating in Edinburgh that I should check out? Any good cigar shops???

Thanks for the input. Just found what seems to be a stupid cheap deal at Mount Snow but still looking.

If you're in Edinburgh check out my house, it's quite nice. Seriously, Castle, Royal Mile, Old Town and New Town as well as a wee walk up Arthur's Seat are decent. Dunno about the cigar shops but there are plenty of decent pubs in the Grassmarket and along Rose Street which is parallel to the main shopping street, Princes Street. If that's what you're looking for.

If you're there in May, try and get to a Hearts game and go to one of the pubs in Gorgie for a pre-match pint. If we're still doing pretty well the stadium should be bouncing. As long as you don't mind people swearing you should be fine.

Anyone else for Sugarbush?

How many trails/lifts are likely to be open by Jan 13th? Most of the mountain or will everyone still be kinda crushed together? What's it been like in the past?

I'm liking the amount of Scottish names and former names of trails at the Bush tho, it'll be like being at home but with trees and Yanks everywhere!

Question goes for any other people and any other resorts. Just wanna get as much info on everywhere before making any decisions so we can have a quality time. Want to make the most of it!

Go further north if it is MLK weekend. If Southern VT (which will be warmer) is cheaper than just head for Bromley or such for the Saturday. Stratton's XC center isn't bad either.

With regards to the Old Firm, my only thought is that 1/2 of the old Firm is not the same thing as 1/2 of the problem (i.e. one teams supporters have a bigger part to play). (On a side note: I was actually happy that they lost to Aab, as one of my better friends lives in Aalborg.)

This is a thread for Snowmonster.

We should be at least 90% open by that point. More than likely, we'll be 100% open if the predicted weather trend plays out. You'll probably have at least 90 trails and 14 lifts to play on. If we're 100%, that's 111 trails and 17 lifts (including GMVS poma if they run it).

Mt. Ellen should be 100%, which would give you 7 lifts and about 40 trails if you chose to get Mt. Ellen-only tickets on any of those days.

Mt. Ellen (formerly Glen Ellen) had a lot of Scottish names in its early years. Some of that has been lost (unfortunately), but I would love to bring it back! Have you seen THIS MAP with all of the Scottish trail names, etc.???

Thanks. With the recent weather and anyone who has any knowledge of longer term forecasts/trends, how are we looking in general for mid January this season?

Also, with it being MLK weekend, is it a good idea to wait and see where has the best conditions/forecast a week before and try and get a late trip or is that likely to end in tears/lots of money/only crappy mountains left?

In other news, I drove an hour this morning to go to a Snowdome in Glasgow, think it was what the term "gaper" was meant for, it was like an obstacle course to get down and I'm pretty sure the lift stopped at least once every time I was on it. Paid 15 pounds ($25) for 2 hours and left after 1 as it was becoming absolutely gash. Legs are getting warmed up nicely though.

I've been using www.toursdesport.com to get quotes so far. Any recommendations for quality online lodging and lift ticket deals?

Cheers
