I'll be curious to know what your success rate is for not getting kicked out — I've heard stories going both ways. In any case, keep the windows cracked or you'll find them badly iced on the inside.

You might want to rethink that 0° for a -20° 8)

So far 100%... 2 for 2. The zero bag should be fine. I have a bigger ~40 degree bag I can double up with if need be. I produce a lot of heat though. Ask Austin. My friends call me "the human furnace."

After spending many late nights reading the Zone, I thought it was about time I posted. I am curious to know the cheapest hotels and best values in skilandia. One of my favorites is the Edelweiss Motel at Killington, only $89 for a weekend nite.

Mount Snow had some unbelievable deals, I got a quote for like 600$ for a Sunday thru Thursday trip ski and stay for 2 adults, 2 kids.

Well, the risk is pretty low, like I said, I've never needed anything and I'm a fairly light sleeper, and I've probably spent more than 40 nights in hostels so far, but of course the risk/reward is up to you. I'm pretty cheap, and I think motels are a rip off, but of course perceived value is dependent on the person.

Price comes above everything nowadays for me. As a matter of fact, since my investment in a 0 degree mummy bag and an Outback wagon, I will probably be spending nights car camping in parking lots, so my priorities are probably not a good metric to go by.

As a side benny, while your on the slope everyone gives you a nice wide berth because 'Something seems to smell funny'.

Do they have Ski and Stay packages? I never looked, it just occured to me they might.

You would have to name your own price to get the best deals at priceline. I don't believe they do ski and stay but I've seen prices so low that it may be better just to buy lift tickets seperately. Another website to try is www.roomsaver.com, this site has printable coupons that will get you excellent rates for the most part, but the coupons are mostly walk in so you're taking somewhat of a risk.

I hope this thread becomes a sticky so us slackers can check out all the great links here when the snow flies. Car camping becomes a better option in the late season IMHO . I think the Lake George area has decent rates / close enough to Gore in the Empire state.

Hiker's Paradise
Little in the way of amenities, and bring your earplugs, but if you like the hostel experience it's cheap and a good place to stay. You'll find a lot of winter hikers and ice climbers there to hang out with in the evening, and expect they'll be waking up über-early to hit the trail. The motel rooms are decent, too, and the breakfast is a bargain.
Hikers Paradise is in Gorham per my original post, not North Conway.

I don't think the hostel thing is for me. I'm a somewhat light sleeper. Well, at least it can take me a while to fall asleep if there is a bunch of snoring going on. My luck I'd have some big sweaty fat guy right near me snoring all night. Maybe I'm antisocial, but I also don't want to have to socialize if I don't want to, and if I want to go to bed at 9 pm, I want it lights out and quiet. I'll pay the extra for a private room.
FWIW, when I have stayed at Hostels on weekends in the winter, they have been not too crowded. At the Hikers Dice, I often score my own room without a bunker. There is no pressure to be social. The common area is there for people who want to chat. Most folks are in bed really really early to get an early start so no worries about being kept up late. Snoring is certainly an issue. I always bring my nose strips and throat spray as a courtesy to other bunkers. Ear plugs if you are sensitive. I have had nothing but great experiences at hostels and have met some really interesting and fun folks. Usually people will share meals and libations with each other if so inclined. All part of the experience for me and it is an experience I enjoy, but I can see why someone else might not. Definitely gotta give it a shot at least once!

Should anyone be staying at Hiker's Paradise in Gorham, and planning to ski the 'Cat this winter, you should ask Bruno if he has lift tickets for sale. Might save you a couple of bucks off the rack rate.... of course, if you've planned ahead, you've covered that with a Wildcard or an on-line discount.

Aye, decent stays by the lake if you want to hit Gore. Some good eats around there as well.

How do you keep those sweaty boot liners from turning into icicles?
