Planning on going somewhere Saturday, Loon has been proposed. Will it be worthwhile, on the Conditions/Crowds = Enjoyment formula?

I will be there Sunday, no matter what thinking about the River for Sat if not then Loon. I would think the crowds everywhere will be a bit bigger this weekend. Its been a while since it has snowed so.... the only advanctage is its between the MLK weekend and Feb vacation week.

careful

be careful, Loon can get really busy on a weekend. Especially since there is going to be "pent up" demand now that conditions are getting better. They limit ticket sales. Either get yours in advance online, or get there before 830am. Here's hoping I am wrong!

I like the trails around the "Camp 3" lift .

I have yet to see loon limit ticket sales.

I have a parking Pass, cause they get full and keep sending them in. Many locals come Sunday with the cheaper threedom pass.

Sunday's are always empty after 11.30 ish. The ride home on Sunday is always a great selling point 2 hour straight down 93.

Bill ski is correct if you buy ahead you get dicounts, via a ski shop stuff like that.
If you Pm me on when you will be coming I could meet you and get you $10 off a full day ticket as a Season pass holder.

I saw them limit sales in the early 90's. They used to have a sign just after you got off 93, around all the shops telling you whether they were full. I saw it happen and heard it reported many times. The lift lines had gotten ridiculously long >45 mins. Perhaps this was remediated with more capacity? Because of this, I stopped going weekends there for
about 9 years.

Well maybe there was a practice. I have not seen it happen in my 6 years. I work around the lines fairly well. Its all about timing. I also have no problem calling it a day if I want to. Ski early eat lunch early, crowds always thin in the afternoon.

I was at Waterville yesterday (Wed Jan 25). Pleasant surprise was a dump of about 4 1/2 inches early that morning. The summit was dust on crust, but the lower mountain was not in bad shape. They had the guns going all day, and are doing everything they can to put snow down. What was open was good, but as you know, they need about two feet of snow for full operation. Loon is probably in the same shape, as I expect Cannon would be also. Overall, I would absolutely go, but wouldn't fight crowds, because whatever terrain is open is going to get the snot beaten out of it this weekend. Midweek there is just enough mountain available...about 60% overall? They are working miracles along 93, but only a big dump (and soon) will rescue them.

So the were in fact making snow at Waterville this week? Good to hear. I've been keeping an eye on Loon's report page and there's been no indication that they're blowing anywhere. Waterville's report page shows the same. A few keystrokes and a mouse click or two really can't be that hard to muster, can it?

Loon: http://www.loonmtn.com/winter/conditions.asp

Waterville: http://www.waterville.com/winter/snowrpt.asp

EDIT: Looks like I spoke too soon about Loon. This is the first snowmaking update I've seen all week.

Loon started back up yesteday on upper picked and Flying fox and cross cut. Update was not put up that early. Looks like the North peak and the burton park are getting some help know, as well as a little on the West side.

Yep, they made snow all day yesterday at WV, so I am going to figure that if they did it, so did the other areas in the region. This keeps what they have open in an operational condition, but probably won't allow them to open large amounts of terrain. I am concerned that the pent-up herds are going this weekend, and at 60% of terrain, most of it green and blue, there is not enough mountain open to handle big crowds. Hope it stays cold up there...

Still trying to decide. Considering Mt. Snow instead. MS is 2.25 hrs. for me, loon is 2.0 hours.
MS has PP/PDR 16" new snow in 7 days, versus Loon's PP 12.
MS has 65/104 trails open, Loon has 41/whatever.

Suggestions?
Ideas?

I am so in that same boat, billski. Loon, Waterville, or Snow. None stand out as being fantastic, it's sort of a question of which will be least bad.

After the Jiminy report, which sounded so good, I thought about Snow, which had 8" yesterday, when loon had 2-4. But everyone needs that new snow for base, so that's why i'm adding up the whole week's accum. It's got to be all pounded down by now. I am NOT skiing this weekend. It will effectively be an MLK rain-date.

I will PM you.

Loon Sat and Sunday for me. Plans were formalized after I actually got to talk to my wife. Kids sports can make you go many directions at once.
