Date(s) Skied: 12/11/2010

Resort or Ski Area: Loon Mountain

Conditions: Loose granular, little PP, extremely icy

Trip Report: There were 30 trails open, and they raised the lift prices this day to $69. Got on the slopes around 10a, and most of the loose granular was already skied off. Almost the entire mountain was a skating rink, very horrible conditions. If I wasn't with a big group having a good time I would have left after a few runs. Loon needs a lot of help from mother nature before I'll be back.

Well $69 was steep no doubt, but I was able to find loose snow to make turns in most everywhere except the North Peak trails. It did kind of deteriorate once the crowds arrived in force late morning (which is why I go to Loon about once every 5 years) but I didn't feel overly ripped off compared to having just a couple of trails open at some of the other NH hills.

Yeah, yesterday afternoon I just skied off the Kanc Quad and found LSGR on Rampasture and Upper Lower Rummrunner. North Peak was closed today as the rain really wiped it out. But, before this rain as everyone who has been to Loon this year, they laid down A LOT of snow in a short amount of time and they will do it again starting tonight

OK.-a little harsh i suppose. I'm sick, bored, haven't skied enough, and on a serious round of codeine. Carry on

In my mind, northern New England
In this case, a day probably makes a difference. I was up there on Sunday and the mountain skied very well. Conditions were firm but edgeable in some spots; soft and powdery in places especially on the sides of the trails. Upper and Lower Walking Boss skied very well. The snow was very soft. Same with Angel Street. Having skied around here, I have a high tolerance for hardpack but Sunday at Loon was no means icy. Winds stopped the gondola and North Peak chair at around 130. That and the rain made us end our day. As to whether it was worth the money, my thought on it is that you charge what the market can bear. That said, there was a good and varied amount of terrain open.

snoseek... its a trip report. No need to tear the guy a new one for stating an opinion on conditions! copland007's TR matches up with the conditions I have seen at Loon on weekends quite well. Which is why I don't ski Loon on weekends any more. :D Or pretty much, ever, for that matter.

Keep those TRs coming, copland007!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For every mountain there are lovers and haters. Readers use their brains to read all the reviews and judge for themselves. Except for me. :dunce:

Thanks for the update copeland!

I can take constructive criticism :) too bad I missed your original post :D

I was at loon the weekend before and you are correct they did make a huge amount of snow quickly, and it was much better conditions, only a few patches of scraping here and there.

But this past weekend, I don't think a single person in our 10 person crew didn't complain about ice at some point during the day.

I do a lot of night skiing at wawa, so I'm use to nasty icy conditions, so for me personally to call another mountains conditions icy... you know where i'm coming from ;)

No my post wasn't too obnoxious but not exactly tactful either.

All I'm saying is you rolled in after the mountain had been open for two whole hours, there was no real new snow and it's Saturday at Loon. This is sort of to be expected no? I feel like they have done everything possible to get stuff open, their snowmaking has been so aggressive this year. As for the price let me ask you this-were there many people there? If yes than that would be the smart business move IMO. Why bother lowballing the price? To attract even more skiers so that it skis off even faster?

Lets face it, loon is generally a shitshow on the weekends, especially Saturday. I've done some midweek days there this year and have been pretty much sold on their commitment to blow snow alone. The place is like night and day comparing Saturday to a Tuesday.

Riv is right, (he always seems to be the voice of reason around here) you are entitled to your opinion. By all means don't let my rant scare you away from posting TR's in the future. They are easily the most important feature of this board.

Peace:beer:
