Resort or Ski Area: Mad River Glen, Vermont

Conditions: A lot of POWDER still left over from the storm, (Greg, thanks for saving us some) Some ice, rocks, and dirt poking through, but nothing to complain about.

Trip Report: Friday we decided to head up to SundayRiver since they got more snow than the VT Mountains. No complaints SundayRiver was nice, folks we met were great it was a good time all around. However, in SundayRiver, I started out on my powder skis and quickly had to change to my carvers when I found myself catching an edge on the groomed trails. Conditions at SR were nice, but not the powder we had hoped for. I’m sure it was there, just had to know where to look.

Saturday, we decided to check out Mad River Glen. I’ve never been there before and since this was the last weekend for the single chair, we just had to go. Roark decided this was a good idea and joined us. I knew it was going to be a good day before we even purchased tickets. Just before we got to customer service to buy tickets a women approaches us and asks if we’re about to buy tickets, we respond with a yes. She happens to be a shareholder and has two lift vouchers that she says she won’t be able to use, gives them to us for free :) I like this place already!

Of course, we had to start our day at the single. Wasn’t at all crowded yet so things were looking good, hey, I like this think. Looks a bit tricky getting on, looks like it might be slow, but, no and no. It was fun riding and wasn’t all that slow at all. One concern I had about MRG is the long lift line for the single, well it goes pretty damn quick. Anyway, V’s leg had been bothering her a bit, so we decided to start easy and took Upper Antelope to warm up. Fun little trail, nice narrow winding NE cruiser. We got as far as Upper Glades when I stopped, looked down and said, hmm…… Asked V and Roark what they thought and it was a go. What a fun run, Upper Glades to Lower Glades. All fresh powder, granted, some rocks and roots poking through in areas, but not bad. We loved the whole ride down.

Where at SR I had to change to my carver, at MRG it wasn’t too long before me and V decided to switch from our mid fats to our powder skis. Once we did that, it was back up and down the same route again, loved this one. Next we went to the double lift and took Panther to Slalom Hill and some of the easier trails down. Then another ride up the double and down Quacky to QuackyIII and I don’t know where. We took a wrong turn somewhere and skiing along side the divider and road where we eventually found ourselves at the top of the beginner area and skied down. What ever trails we took were a trip, all bumps and turns like a roller coaster, I think this trail should be renamed and called Six Flags :) It took us awhile to get back since we did make one more wrong turn or two and wound up having to have to climb out of the woods, but we got back and met up with Roark. At this point, everyone was tuckered out from the bumps and powder, however, no one wanted to take a break. Another couple of rides up the single and down the glades and after that, all of our quads were screaming. We called it a day at about 2. Overall, we were all happy we decided to go to MRG, conditions were great and no question about it, we will be back, great area!

Funny thing was Vee was hurting early, but the snow was so good once she loosened up and got the powder sticks out she ended up wearing out Andy and me. Poor guy kept just laying down on his side

Hell of a day

You should have seen her on Sunday at Killington, girl didn't want to quit! Those Phat Luvs just transform her into a whole nother skier. But, it makes me happy seeing her so happy. Oh, and you missed a great day on Sunday as well!

You almost come to appreciate the lift line if there is one. On Friday, I usually needed the 5-10 minute lift line + the ride up just to recover. We were getting about one run in every 45 minutes. We skied from 9:30 - 5:10 and I think we got in 9-10 runs. I felt as if I had been steamrolled on Saturday. MRG is an ass-kicking hill for sure.

No question about it, in the right conditions, that mountain can do a number on you. V had stated that she would hate to be there if it gets more crowded and the lines get longer. My response was that skiing here, the rest is nice and you don't need to get in as many runs as you do at other mountains. It's both immense pleasure and work in conditions such as this weekend.

Saturday I felt really sore, yesterday was even worse, and today I can still feel it. It feels great! :)

Cheers, Andy. Glad you enjoyed a good day at the Glen. I was also there Saturday and it was a very short line for the Single for a weekend, especially a powder weekend. Though as others have said, it isn't that bad waiting for the lift when you need to recover from your most recent descent. If you think the Single line gets too long, not as long a line on the double and much of the same terrain. Best to hit the Single first thing in the morning then move over to the Double when lines get longer. But hey, its the Single! Its always worth the wait. I hammered the Double hard on Saturday since it didn't open Friday and scored untracked every run right up until lunch time. Still nailing lots of boot to knee deep untracked yesterday in the trees. Two of my best days at Mad River ever, and the lack of crowds on a powder weekend sure helped, though it was bitter sweet to see the place so empty on such a glorious weekend.

Would have enjoyed meeting you as well. Hey, there is always Tuckerman later this Spring.

You are definitely on to something there, especially if steep and excessively tight trees are not your strong point ;)

Definitely want to get to Tucks this year.

I'm learning to love the trees but I'm sure I'd have trouble keeping up with you. Always like to ski with people who push me though.
