Date Skied: 1/25/09

Resort or Ski Area: Mad River Glen

Conditions: Packed powder, ranging from very firm and barely edgeable, to smooth and easy to ski

Trip Report: I went to MRG with my older son yesterday afternoon. It was chilly, so we took a midday break and cut out about a quarter to 4:00 when we'd intended to ski right up until the last lift.

The upper mountain stuff was skiing better than I'd expected, given the lack of real snow lately. They must have had more snow up top during the recent dustings. Even the woods/glades stuff were skiing very well up there. Most of the mountain had been groomed, but there were bumps along many of the usual suspects. They ranged from easy, developing bumps to some hard, big, and steep fields.

The lower mountain was mostly skiing well, although there were a couple of places like S-Turn, where the snow was really scraped, and some icy parts as well.

Without looking at the map, we alternated runs between the double and the single, with runs on Beaver, Canyon, Rockefeller, Quaky (I, II, III), Bunny, Canyon, Upper and Lower Glades, Catamount, Antelope, Lower Antelope (love that run except for the last, uphill bit, which is a PITA), and finished the day with a cut across Birdland to Snail->Periwinkle->Periwinkle Bowl. Dipped into the woods a couple of times and they were still skiing surprisingly well.

Last week we hit MRG on MLK weekend, and the lines were awful. Yesterday, I felt like we had our own private mountain half the time. There couldn't have been more than 20 or 30 skiers who were there at the very end of the day.

One poor woman had bungled up her knee or leg on the practice slope at the very end of the day. She was lying there in very obvious pain as we came off our last run while they loaded her onto a stretcher. There was already an ambulance there. I hope she's alright.

Anyway, conditions should be pretty good for Mad River's $3.50 lift ticket day tomorrow.

Appreciate this report, was curious how they've held up in the recent cold but mostly dry spell. Have opted for closer mountains my last two Sundays out (yesterday and week before last) but eyeing a day trip to MRG Thurs if I can get off from work and the forecast for Wednesday verifies.

I think I've said this before but if I were limited to ski just one run out of the various places I've been in New England, Lower Antelope would be it -- even with the traverse/climb through the woods at the bottom. If I do go Thurs I'll be looking to make first tracks on it ...

You know I don't think I've ever actually skied anything but the bottom/traverse of that trail.

I'm hoping to be skiing there 2/7, but with MRG you never can plan too far out. I guess that's true for all of New England, but more so with MRG
