Resort: Mad River Glen
Date Skied: 12/21
Conditions: Powder, packed powder, grass, rocks, wind
Today was the worst best ski day I've had. Up top of the double, the lift line looked like the windswept plateau of Tibet, with howling wind and blowing snow and either huge drifts or completely bare rock and grassy tundra looking stuff.
Once you got past twenty seconds of struggling through this maelstrom, got into the woods and below the summit, conditions were awesome. Big, snowy bumps, not a groomed trail in sight. We skied most of the usual suspects on the double between Panther and Bunny and everything in between.
On about the sixth run, we swung left through Birdland, where the lifts weren't running. Few people made an attempt to get over there, so it was knee deep powder in some places. Periwinkle Bowl was my favorite of the day, with powder and more powder. Unfortunately, that was the last run of the day, as I'll explain below.
In short, conditions were awesome, except for the wind at the very top, but we never got to ride the single. We took a warmup run before heading to the single and then it was put on wind hold. We skied for a couple of hours and then they put the double on wind hold as well. Really sucked since the mountain was only windy up top, as I said. I wouldn't have cared about missing the single, if they hadn't closed the double, too. I don't know if they are going to reopen it, since we eventually got tired of waiting and bailed.
