Haven't heard anything about either NOT opening, so I think we're good to go.

Both are low key resorts when it comes to marketing.

Ascutney just got their masterplan for Condos approved...IIRC.

Magic: involved in a multi-year revival. They may have finally gotten that Triple built. Some work on snowmaking and clearing underbrush I think there.

As to other quiet areas:

* Burke: no major changes this season. They renovated the lodge (again) so that they can host musical acts. No work on snowmaking or terrain...despite what was advertised in 2005. Their development plans are inching forward.

* Bolton: work done this season on snowmaking. No other big changes.

* Smuggs: I think they added one glade.

My firm gets the Vermont Ski Areas Association Newsletter...and I read it...so that is my source of info (going on memory).

The big thing for Magic is getting Act 250 approval for their expanded snowmaking pond. They ran into some problems last fall but were supposed to be all set with that for this winter. Haven't heard anything one way or another. Jim Sullivan seems to be working hard on moving Magic to a more solid foundation.

You didn't hear it from me...

Magic hired back ops staff and started mowing, lift work, etc.

That's all I've heard. Sounds to me like they plan on being back. Yippee!

WE stopped in at Magic a few weeks back. It looked like there had been activity around the base in preparation for opening this season.

It also looked like there was some recent work on what looked like it could have been a snowmaking pond along the access road.

I don't see any reason to think that they won't be open.

Matt Lillard has been around here recently, maybe he can shed some light on goings on there.

i"m on magics emailing list- heres the latest mountain update- looks like full steam ahead........

DATE: 9/23/08 VOLUME NO. 2 ISSUE: 28

Fall has arrived and with it has come our first couple of morning frosts. There is definitely a bite in the air indicting that winter will be here before we know it. The countdown has begun, we should be skiing and riding the classic terrain of Magic Mountain in under 81 days. I hope you are as excited as we are.

As October approaches we are beginning to prepare for the new season. On Mountain mowing and brush cutting has begun and we are starting to prep the Red and Black lifts for another season at Magic. We have spent some of the summer months continuing to patch and repair the snowmaking infrastructure on the mountain and our lower mountain pump is out at the shop receiving a complete overhaul in anticipation of snowmaking temps arriving at the end of November.

So get your skis and snowboards down to a shop for a fall tune up and dig your winter gear out of the closet, the 2008-2009 season is fast approaching. If you haven't bought your season pass for the upcoming season, now is the time to take advantage of the summer prices before they go up on October 1st.

Think Snow!
