Matt Lillard, Marketing Director for Magic Mountain has agreed to take the 2007 Alpine Zone Challenge! This is your opportunity to ask questions, offer suggestions, or say some praise to the men and women who are in charge of the Northeast’s Ski Areas. Please post some suggested questions in this thread and we'll select ten to present for official responses.

Also please don't be offended if we edit/change your question for grammar, tone, or some other minor thing. In order to get in all of the questions we MAY merge some questions but we'll do our best to keep the substance of your question. If we don't get your question in, feel free to post a follow up after we get the results...we are encouraging the representatives follow the threads.

As always, please be respectful of Matt and keep it civil. Also, please refrain from asking specifics about skier visit numbers, financials, demographic information, etc. Magic needs to be discrete about certain information.

We are honored to have Magic join us for their THIRD AZ Challenge (and Matt's second)! Please take advantage of this special opportunity!

Ask away!

I know you mentioned that you would like to offer at least one good bump trail at Magic this season. Has a location been finalized? Have you decided if and how it might be seeded? How much of an effort will be made in maintaining its quality throughout the season (i.e. reseeding after a thaw-freeze or if the lines deteriorate, consistent top-coating with snowmaking, etc.)? A nice long seeded run would go a long way to compliment Magic's edgy terrain, especially in a lean snow year when all the really good stuff isn't open as often as we'd all like.

What are your plans to groom more terrain? All those natural trails were a big disappointment that last time I was there.

I LOVED the all natural trails last winter. 'Course you had to pick the right days. But please, if you do put 'makers on the trails, DON'T widen them or make them boulevards! There are very few winding trails left in NE where you can't see top to bottom. It's the fun of not knowing what's around the next bend (and I don't mean danger) that keeps things fun and interesting.

Oh, and please, can we have the gift shop open for a few more hours each day? Every time I've visited, it was closed, and I'm talking operating hours ("It's privately owned, we dont control it, she'll be right back"). I still don't have my Magic ski pin!

Can you provide any details on the revamped snowmaking system?

To expand on this thought, specifically, what trails will you be capable of making snow on this year. I know in the past I've seen stats that 87% (i think thats the number) of your trails have snowmaking coverage. I'm not sure how accurate that number really is. Do you have the capability to blow some snow on master magician? I know people love the all natural terrain but that trail is so steep and exposed, it seems like snowmaking is almost a requirement to get it open with any regularity.

When do you anticipate the Phoenix (Blue) Lift being completed?

Do you anticipate making a little snow on Lucifer this year on at least the head walls? I know in past years there was some snow made on Witch, but lack of cover on the Lucifer head walls made skiing it core shot city.

To expand a little further what is the lift plan for the future? Phoenix chair, Beginner chair, etc? Also in a previous challenge a long term plan was extending the black chair, is that still on the master plan?

Have you ever considered joining forces with another area(s) for passes to compete with the big guys?Or maybe just smaller areas banding together for marketing purposes kind of like the colorado gems card?

What realistically, can a Magi skier expect in improvements to justify a fairly significant increase in lift ticket costs, especially weekend/holiday ticket rates?

The island of misfit toys.
With the new lift ticket pricing structure, has their been any thought given to instituting a customer loyalty program? An example would be Hunter's Big Lift Card, where the purchaser gets various discounts on ticket purchases.
