Hi all.

First time poster, be kind.

Taking my son up to VT for the Fri + Sat (Mar 2 +3). Planning to ski Okemo on Friday and had been undecided for Sat until i saw the AZ video for Magic (Feb 16ish).

I haven't been to Magic in 15 years and realize that the video was shot right after a big dump of snow, anyone have a feeling for what conditions will be like there for the upcoming weekend?

Thanks,
Gary

Welcome Gary. What type of skier are you and your son? The really good stuff up there will likely be bumped up and thin unless we get dumped on beforehand...

Hi Greg.

My son is a solid BLUE skier (lev 2??).. he handles all the blue trails @ okemo well but is not a big fan of the bumps.. i love bumps but can't ski them for more than a few runs before my legs get tired. i'm a not too agressive lev 3 skier.

We'd stay at Okemo for Saturday as well but i'd like to try something new. Since we're heading back to CT on Saturday night i was planning to go south from Okemo. I see MT Snow seems to be a popular mtn for many in this forum. i'm not such a big fan mostly due to the traffic leaving that place at night and my lack of 4wd for the short cut someone once showed me.

they groom the east side pretty extensively it seems like. You'll find plenty of trails over there to you and your sons liking. Gregs' video didnt include any of those trails, primarily because we never went over there, but i've skied them and you'll enjoy yourself. I would give it a shot.

Well said. The mountain could use support so go ahead and give it! :)

Magic will be considerably less crowded and cheaper as well. Great local hill. Just less "amenities."

Thanks everyone. I'm not too worried about the amenities. It is just my son and me with the possibility of a buddy of mine joining us. We're just going to ski, eat and sleep, don't need anything fancy.

I found a room "slope side" @ The Inn on Magic Mountain for $120 on Friday night with room for 3 of us to sleep. Haven't stayed there before but reviews online sound good.

Perhaps i'll write a trip report when i get back.

Forecast calls for snow on Friday / Friday night so maybe we'll get lucky!!

The Inn at Magic was updated this year so you should find it a good deal. It's a short walk to Magic so it's easy to check out.

Most people that talk about Magic on the forums are in for the steeps. Magic has some great novice and intermediate terrain. If your son is a solid blue at Okemo, he'll find some great slopes at Magic. Some Magic blues would be blacks at Okemo so they're great for progressing. Besides the east side (left facing the mountain), Wizzard (about 1.8 mile long) on the west side fluctuates between a blue and black has snow making and is usually groomed.

PS I noticed you're from Monroe, I grew up in Shelton.

Sorcerer, you were right, the Inn on MM was very nice. Rooms clean and the owner/operator was very friendly. $119 for one weekend night in a room that could easily sleep 4 adults included a well stocked continental breakfast.

Skied mostly the eastern side of the mountain on Saturday with my son and a friend but we did manage one run down Twilight Zone which was a blast.

The powder made for soft landings!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUQG_gHwxQo

BTW, my buddy who joined us is also a native of Shelton. Small world!

If you went down Twilight Zone, your son is more than a solid blue skier. That's a double diamond even with soft snow - lots of bumps too.

Glad you enjoyed it.

For the life of me, I can't understand why you would be planning a trip to Magic Mountain. I just looked at their site, maps, etc., and was not impressed at all. With SO MANY other great options in VT, why Magic?

Magic was great on sunday. The east side was groomed but still soft, unlike the rock solid cordoury that turns to ice at most areas with the less traffic it stayed soft all day. The ungroomed was a little tougher but much better then snow was sat. They must have gotten alot less rain as it wasn't frozen and no crust.

Why anyone would want to go stand in line with 10,000 of your closest friends at okemo/stratton/snow etc over the great skiing at magic is a mystery to me.

I guess you've never skied or seen Magic. I'm not sure what other great options you're talking about. Although Magic has some interesting novice and intermediate terrain, it has some of the most challenging and interesting slopes south of Killington.

It's also cheap with no crowds.

Mcmountain, that's awesome... I just choked on my fig newton.

But really, if you haven't been there, how can you say what it's like? Take a trip down Redline or Twighlight and then try saying it sucks.

The troll speaks again. Just got back from there and it was a hell of a place. A true New England mountain. No crowds, very little grooming, and bumped up steep narrow trails. And some truly good bump skiers, even the real young ones where ripping down them.

Next weekend I'll be getting my first days in at Magic in a couple years, and I cannot wait. Probably been 5 years since I've been there when Red Line was open.

Why ski the best mountain in Southern New England indeed? You may never find out if you do not go yourself. But I guess you need a ski map made by James Niehues and a million dollar web site for a ski area to be worth skiing. Some of the best ski areas in New England have neither (Mad River Glen and Burke amongst them). So try the mountain out before you judge it. There have been many recent testaments on AlpineZone about the quality of terrain at Magic Mountain. Ignorance is bliss, but awesome skiing at a great mountain is even more so.
