Yep, I'd sooner try all of the above mentioned before I'd pay the same for Magic. I'd say Wildcat is the best example. They have similar old school terrain, and are pretty much the same kind of drive time from population bases. Most importantly, they have atleast 100 times the money sunk into the place, one of my precious HSQ's, and charge the same amount?. I don't need 50 HSQ's, just one that gets me from base to peak on a mountain is plenty. Because of this, the place will indeed track out a little bit faster on a powder day than magic...but hey, I'm going to get 2 or 3 times the vert in on a powder day and not destroy my skis in the process because they actually make some snow... and that's what I look for. For me atleast, nothing runs a powder day quicker than tearing half your base off on a boulder, and I think that would be the net result of a visit to magic :-(
Jeez, cut a guy a break and he runs the other way with it. I would rather ski Magic than Wildcat except Spring skiing when Wildcat is at its best. Given they were equal prices, I would still generally pick Magic over Wildcat, all things being equal, which they generally are not.... but if they were. Magic on a powder day? You must never have been the way you talk about it...

Pretty much in 100% agreement. Myself, I'm not real big on older, slower, potentially sketchy lifts myself, or narrow trails.... 90% of the time. I like to ski groomers on a good pair of GS or SG skis at about mach 5, and put in a lot of vert in a day. If I tried skiing in my typical fashion at Magic, I'm pretty sure I would end up busted up in a hurry after hitting some unmarked obsticle or bad patch of snow.
Well, actually... Magic is EXTREMELY under rated for groomers. Which I have never seen a rock or obstacle on even before they mowed all the brush down a half dozen years ago.

At Magic, you're plain and simply not getting value for your money.
A laughable statement if I have ever read one on AlpineZone.com. My argument is Magic's pricing structure is rather high compared to other mountains in its class and also significantly higher than historical precedent and typical yearly increase rates. Even at the new pricing, you can certainly get your money's worth at Magic regardless of ability level. If you can't get your money's worth out of Magic, that isn't Magic Mountains fault, that is for sure.

So, using the logic I'm reading here, in order for me to be a REAL skier, I need get ripped off by a mountain? At Magic, you're plain and simply not getting value for your money. To me, a REAL skier supports a mountain that he or she can see is putting the money you pay them back into improvements, which in turn improves skier safety. Magic doesn't seem to ever invest in anything in the off season short of a few cans of paint, and they can't possibly have any serious debt to service. That means SOMEONE is getting rich from you skiing there and doesn't give a crap about making things any better for you. If they don't care about their mountain or me....why the hell should I care about them???

So paying 2 bucks less at MRG you would feel that you are getting ripped off?

The island of misfit toys.
Bearing in mind I've never skied Magic, here is one way to look at it.

The significantly below market pricing of the past had a ring of desperation to it. From a marketing standpoint, being the lowest price guy on the block is generally not a desireable position. It would now appear that management has enough confidence to put their pricing on par with others.

Lastly, I would not be surprised to see mid-week discounts announced later this fall, prior to opening. Or perhaps they will institute a loyalty discount program, ex. Hunter's Big Lift Card.

If there is an AZ day at Magic this year I will try to be there.

The only thing that stands out at me is that Bromley down the road always has $25 midweek tickets. Even though they are different mtns for sure their proximity means they are always in competition. I haven't been to Magic since they were connected to Timber Ridge, but I didn't forget that it is WAY steeper than Wildcat. Nothing against it, but the Wildcat is more like a pussycat. It's just not steep.

 Hey snoman: You just got owned...

Poor guy. One should be aloud to participate in AZ without being ripped for not loving Cannon/Magic/Pico and darling SB. He cares more about lift speed and lift safety than steep terrain or a throwback minimalistic trendiness. Good for him. I happen to value different things in a hill, but we shouldn't harp on him for his ski area utility function.

For my $0.02, the price change at Magic will likely reduce the number or trips I take there (from 1 to 0, or 2 to 1).

No one is harping on anyone for personal preference but rather for blanket statements.

And that's the problem I saw underlying snowman's argument. His argument stands on the lack of value pillar about Magic, but assumes that everyone values the same things (that he does) at a ski resort, which is clearly not true, as evidenced by several skiers on this board.

I, for one, value narrow trails, natural snow, and small on hill crowds more than fast lifts and updated lodges. Snowman doesn't and that's fine, but calling a mountain's lift ticket prices high simply because one person feels there is no returned value does not make it an absolute statement.

Market prices, after all, are set by suppply and demand only. The cost to the supplier associated with production can only set a price floor which will determine if there is enough demand for said market.

Thanks Mad. I think I'm pretty much done here. I'll make the odd post here or there to people I know aren't in it to act like retards, but that's about it. For some reason, stating what I like or prefer in a post using: I, and For me etc. contsitutes a blanket statement? I'm pretty sure if I said gold is worth money right now, I'd have 10 people telling me it wasn't, so that's enough of this for me.

Snowman, I took no umbrage with your posts when you stuck to "I" or "me." You're very right, that doesn't constitute a blanket statement. The one below bolded did-

If that "you" was addressed to someone in particular, you should have specified a bit better, but I, probably like most others who have read this thread, read it as addressing the general skiing population. I stand by what I said.

The reason you got ripped into as much as you did, is because much of what you said is out of ignorance. You don't appear to have ever skied there, nor do you seem to have a clue about what is/has gone on at the mountain. For your information, they ARE spending a good deal of money on the mountain, and they are doing a lot of work on it, including increasing the size of the snowmaking pond by 400% for this year.

River,

Your price comparison between Magic and some of the other similar VT mountains makes sense...if you are a VT local or have Burke, MRG and Jay within a day's drive. I think location should also be considered, at least when looking at it from the perspective of a NJ resident that has a long long way to drive just to get to good skiing. It is still a stretch to call Londonderry a day trip kind of resort for people living in the NY metro area, but it is a fine drive for a quick weekend trip.

The 6 hours of driving saved (over Jay) is worth 5 bux right there.

Fair points. For the record, I am no longer a VT local nor was I when I first started skiing Magic so my thoughts on the matter do reflect the Boston Metro perspective as well when Burke and Magic were the same drive, MRG slightly further, and an hour more on top of that. I think comparing pricing without taking into account driving distance is fair as you pay for what you get. For some one in the position of driving from NYC or NJ, then distance becomes more important than ticket price for sure. But ticket pricing can still be compared to similar mountains, IMO. Compare those mountains to Saddleback... even with the longer drive, the savings in ticket price is significant. But that does not work in Saddleback's favor. Good points though, I agree from a personal perspective there is more to a destination decision than lift ticket price alone.

Depends on what you're driving too. Chevy Aveo total cpm would be something like 10 cents, where a Cadilac Escalades total cpm is more like 60 cents. An extra 200 miles round trip is more than the price of tickets in a lade!

snowman, out of curiosity, how often have you skied Magic and when was the last time you went?
