Date(s) Skied: Saturday February 25, 2012

Resort or Ski Area: Magic Mountian

Conditions: Wind blown powder and crust

Trip Report: Many times we make plans far ahead and deal with the consequences. I bought ticket vouchers back in early December on a tip from the Skiing on the Cheap - 2011-12 Edition thread. My brother and I then made plans to ski at Magic some time if February. One planned trip on the 4th was cancelled due to an untimely cold and so we made subsequent plans for the 25th.

It seemed that those plans were harmonizing nicely with the weather as a rare snow storm was poised to bring several inches overnight on the 24th. Well a good deal of that was in the form of rain in Southern Vermont that formed a frozen glaze over everything (and stuck pretty mightily to the Black chair) with only a couple inches of powdery snow on top of a kind of edge-able crusty-ish corduroy. That coupled with the rest of this miserable season and Magic’s limited snowmaking there was little to ski. I don’t remember any trails other than Talisman and Trick. It was windy too - very windy - although not extremely cold and the chairs were out of the wind enough so it was a comfortable ride up. The new cushions on the newly painted Red Chair made a huge difference compared to the Black Chair on which we froze our butts.

We ended our day at the Black Line Bar with a $11 deal for food but a computer glitch meant we waited over an hour to eat. We weren’t alone in out wait, as very many people around us all waited patiently for their food. The staff was gracious and apologetic and did their best.

As my Mom used to say ‘You pays your money and you takes your chances’ but all in all it wasn’t too bad - much better than work.

Video to come - working on a GoPro edit that my take a couple days.

Sorry that it was suboptimal. Good thing I decided not to bother. I do want to get to Magic but not to ski hardpack and/or crust. Maybe there will be a good day in March.

We were at Magic on Sat as well. I actually thought conditions were pretty good. Best day of the 3 we have been there so far this year. Certainly they didnt get the epic ness of NoVt but conditions were fun.
East side Trick to ShowOff was carveable...quite windy coming down over there though and they are bit more exposed than West Side.
Talisman was run of the day for us. Hit that abt 9am and was super nice...2-3" of fresh on top of groomed/firm hardpack skied pretty sweet. First time skiing Lower Wizard on the season and that was nice, especially for my wife who enjoyed the character of the trail.
Lunch break was supposed to be an hour at most. We got in there abt 1:20, placed order abt 1:30 and didnt get food until 3 ish? Love Magic but this was annoying----mentioned a computer glitch but hopefully they figure out a backup plan for next time.
Rode Black chair for the 1st time ever...cold...frozen chair pads made for a long/wet ride up. Red seems to run faster so I'm unsure how often I will use Black going forward.

I did duck the rope into Goniff Glade early on...interesting coverage in there...legit shin to knee deep drifts followed by bare rock. Certainly Goniff got a lot of blow in but it was too sketchy down low to make it worth it a 2nd time.
Fun day overall!

Sorry if I made skiing at Magic Saturday sound bad. It really only didn't live up to my expectations. When I left my apartment in Bristol, NH there was 5 inches on the ground and I assumed that elevation would make things better. I was wrong and it colored my report. It was however a true alpine experience and truly given the choice between sitting at my desk at work and the wind, crust and less than expected snow cover at Magic I'd choose skiing at Magic without hesitation. I think the video will better show how it was. I'm just not the best at editing video so its slow going. Hey, at least the chair didn't derail!

I did think about hitting some of the thin cover that presented itself but didn't want to risk a core shot.

Ok your second post here makes more sense to me cause as Xwhaler said, it skied pretty well on Saturday even with the crazy winds. I was up all week and I would say Satruday was the best day of the week. Old red was able to run without any wind issues and the new snow we did get brought more spots into play which was great. I got to ski some runs that I haven't been able to yet this year. Some of those thin spots skied very well and actually ahve a very hard base layer unde them that wold likey limit core shots. I skied many of them and had little more than a shallow scratch or two.

I have to agree with xwhalers report. And riding the black lift did suck with the frozen mess on the seats!

The time up each chair is pretty similar though I'd give the nod to black. Though its more exposed than red so I beleive they had it running slower than normal due ot the winds.

Saw some tracks down Broomstick...wanted to hit it but having never skied the trail I wasn;t sure what the rock situation was like underneath and didnt want to take any chances skiing it solo. Seems like they got some blow in from Magician which was pretty bare as well as maybe some of the snowmaking snow on Wizard. Possibility of opening Wed/Thurs if this storm materializes?

My brother was freaking out about a score on his new Richters. I don't think I would have felt as bad about a score or two on my 4 yr old Dynastars as I'm mounting the Fritchi's in April.

From what I "heard" Broom to blackline skied pretty well on Saturday;-) You would ahve been fine I'm sure but always a smart move to not hrad into unpatrolled areas solo. As for this storm I'm not sure. My gut tells me yes if it materializes but technically the policy has been to open on a midweek powder day of 6 or greater inches with at leat 50% of the mountian open.

Same here, rode on Sunday tho. I was all over the place. Accidentally ended up on a few trails that were closed and my board just has a few scratches on the bottom.

Although I don't really care about my board too much.

I was there as well on Saturday. Skied from 10:30 till close and had a great day on the hill. The 5 miles that has seen some man made snow is skiing awesome!! So nice to be able to rip high speed GS turns down Wizard and Talisman on the west side without fear of rocks and such.

Hit up some of the natural trails in the afternoon and was rewarded with some super soft turns in the fresh snow. Kinderspiel, Medium, and a few others offered up some incredible turns and with the wind all the tracks were quickly refilled. The hard base layer of snow underneath made what looked nasty actually very ski-able and I managed not to do any damage to the sticks (even with a run down Hans).

Stuck around for the winter-festival festivities and had a complete blast. Being a part of the torch light parade was a special experience, the memories will last for some time to come, Can't wait for next years parade!! :snow::snow::snow:

Here's some of the fireworks........

Well, this just doesn't compare with many of the powder vids that many have released it is what it is. I had the hardest time formatting this. What I finally uploaded to YouTube is not HD - sorry. Maybe its better that way. :p Enjoy.
