If he'll be in Bangor, then Sugarloaf is the only real choice. I don't think there's enough natural snow for anywhere other than a ski area to be a good bet, and Sugarloaf will be closer than Sunday River.

I wouldn't recommend taking a day trip from Bangor to NH or VT. You can't get there from here, ayuh.

the meet is over on Sunday, so he has to head back to NY anyway on Monday, so he can leave ME, and drive anywhere as he has to get back to NY Monday night......

Sunday River is your best bet for lift-serviced. They haven't ruled out opening this weekend (unlike K). The River blew snow top to bottom Thurs thru Sun so they will have the best manmade coverage. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Sunday River opened for the season on Sat., Sun or Mon.

Bangor and the state's woodlands
conditions up here.....

SQ,
SR is focusing on this weekend for starting lift service and will most likely have something by Monday, but the Loaf's temps are usually ~10 degrees cooler..but Wed and Thurs could be ugly...
They are running the SuperQuad...(last link...showing daily pics). The big IF is...if the cover can survive Wed & Thurs's rain...it'll be skiable...

From Bangor both SR and SL are very similiar(SR is prob less) is distant to drive in relationship to going down south back to the NY area. Personally, I would take the opportunity to drive over the Acadia NP and go on some great hikes or rent a bike and cruise around on the carriage roads all around the park.
