I would like to hope they are buried under a snowdrift somewhere, but, sigh, probably not. I'd have to go to CO this week for that.

Yes, it's a true story. But they were stolen from a private concern, not the State of NH.

T he Concord police are asking for the public’s help to find 40 snowplows and a 12-ton flatbed trailer stolen this weekend from EW Sleeper Co. on Loudon Road. The snowplows are Fisher brand, and the trailer is a Hudson. The police believe the thief or thieves used the flatbed trailer to haul away the plows.
The theft occurred between Friday and Sunday. Anyone with information should contact the Concord Regional Crimeline at 226-3100 or concordregionalcrimeline.com.
All tips can remain anonymous, and there are cash awards for tips that lead to an arrest and indictment.

On September 19, 2006 the Concord Police Department was called to EW Sleeper Company Incorporated, 391 Loudon Road for the report of a theft of equipment. The company reported the theft of forty (40) Fisher brand snow plows, along with a yellow Hudson brand 12 ton flatbed trailer. Further investigation indicates that the theft most likely occurred sometime between Friday, September 15th and Sunday, September 17th. This was the weekend of the NASCAR Nextel Race in Loudon.
The suspect(s) likely used the company’s Hudson flatbed trailer to transport the stolen plows, which were stored in a location outside of the business.

Clearly it's going to be very difficult to fence stolen snowplows. There seem to be only two other possible motivations, both of which are kinda intriguing:
1) Somebody somewhere far away is expecting a very heavy winter and is taking the plows to Colorado or Alaska or Labrador. We need to find out what place that is.
2) New Hampshire is in for a very heavy winter and the snowplows are going to be ransomed along about February.

Mapnut, you're onto something here. Maybe we should use "follow the snowplows" as a snowfall indicator. Maybe we could get the snowplow manufacturers to give us an indicator where the sales are this year....

since this is the biggest crime in NH since eight kids were caught egging the principal's car....

Well at least they were Fisher plows so they wouldn't of lasted that long anyways.

Funny, you would need a tractor and the skills to hook up a flat bed on top of the motivation to steal something like this. They could have possibly driven to another state or Canada before the bulletin was put out. If they made Ohio and had a yard to hide it all in, I would say it would be a successful crime. However, I would think if you are going to commit grand larceny, you would hit a jeweler.

No offense intended at all, but that's a flatlander's perspective. People in hill country are pretty skilled with operating all kinds of vehicles including semis, tractors, dozers and skidders. [ If you're going to steal plows and a trailer, you're adept enough to steal a tractor too. (Jist put it back when your done with it)] There are plenty of woods to hide things in. Oh yes and they're pretty skilled with firearms too :smile:

When I was doing a bird study in Arizona lo these many years ago, some guy hijacked a truck full of cabbage and drove it into the woods on the Moggollan Rim. We ran across it one morning, parked in the middle of a valley, engine running. It sat there for 3 days before the FBI came in, questioned us all, and asked us to keep an eye out since they couldn't find the driver. His body turned up the next springabout 5 miles from our camp. Spooky.
The moral of the story- stealing a tractor trailer rig isn't all that hard. At least, there are lots of people capable of it. I bet the trailer is worth more than the snow plows.

It's only a 12 ton trailer. Any good size dump truck could haul it away. My 9 year old son could hook it up. And no it was not us.
@ about $4000 retail for a plow x 30 that trailer would have to be gold plated to be worth more than the plows.
