MLK weekend

Nope. My plan is to drive North tomorrow night, be on the hill at 7:30 when Mount Snow opens up for passholders and ski until kids lessons drop off time about 9:15. Then drive back home to CT, load up the car for tailgating. Leave about 2PM with my Patriots crew to get to the stadium parking lots about 4. Go watch Tebow's season end! Back home to CT probably about 1ish. Grab a few hours of sleep. Back up to Mount Snow and hopefully be on the mountain by 10:30! My wife thinks i'm a bit crazy for wanting to do this, but I want to get my days on the hill in!

I thought football season was over? It's hockey season (oh crap, that one doesn't work for my other Pittsburgh team either).

Back to the scheduled program...

Still trying to decide whether it's worth heading up. The 1/2 ft "dump" is creating a lot of excitement. I had made plans to hit up some of the northern VT/NH mountains. But this morning's trail counts of a few ( (Jay, Burke, Bretton Woods) are still only 50% of their total. Don't know if it's just because they're busy preparing the trails (or "saving them") for the weekend? Or there's simply no base on the natural snow trails that it's still no skiable?

Anyone care to guess (or know) if any of those mountains will be fully open tomorrow or will they still be less than 3/4 open? Given this is a holiday weekend, I'm worried about too twice the people on 1/2 the terrain!

Also not clear to me how the roads might be like this evening and late into the night. That would be the time frame I'll be on the road up north if I head up later today.

Those of you who're already up north, how's the skiing today?

I'm sure most are probably going to drop some more ropes for the holiday Saturday, which is obviously very welcome news, and keep in mind N.VT should get another 3 or 4 today and C.VT maybe as much as 6 or 8 more, so best conditions thus far, and most with snowmaking will likely be closer to 2/3 or 3/4 open than 50% I'd imagine.

That said, I personally decided to bag this weekend, partly due to the Holiday-factor and logic you mentioned, partly due to the fact this storm wasnt the major dump some predicted, and partly because they're saying wind chill could be in the -20s up on the mountains.

With a few more inches Burke will likely drop some more ropes. Don't worry too much about the holiday crowds there. There will probably be even fewer poeple on the slopes because of the cold.

I'm not too bothered by cold. Probably those years in Michigan trained me well.

Wind worries me a bit more. But that's why I'm particularly thinking of Bretton Woods. They seems to be in the wind shadow of some sort, even though their slopes are facing north. Probably due to all the high peaks around them?

But if the woods at Jay are not open, it's going to be skiing in the deep freezer on groomer! I'm not sure I'm up for driving 6 hrs to do THAT!

I was talking about the mountains up north too, the Catskills, good Lord I wouldnt even consider. I assumed you meant Vermont etc... Yeah, the Catskills will be a trainwreck. The places like Smuggs and Jay and Stowe will be 75% open I'd imagine. Stowe is getting close to pulling the 100% trigger soon I'd bet.

That's where I was thinking too, they're slated for another 4 to 8 inches up there on top of the 5'ish they got yesterday. Only thing is, NOAA is calling for -30s windchill up there, which is more than my delicate self can take.
