Trails(s) Hiked: Lost Farm Trail, Cliff Walk, Pumpelly, Spellman

Total Distance: 2 - 3 mi.

Difficulty: ?

Conditions: Sunny, no wind, ~60-65F at the summit

Special Required Equipment:none

Trip Report:

I know I don't normally post in the hiking forums, because I don't do a whole lot of hiking, but we decided, with no wind and near perfect weather conditions, it would be a good day to see Monadnock. I had never been. I went with my old FD roomie Jon, my friend Mark and his gf Irina.

It was very crowded. The summit was like an ant hill. One member of the party had the good idea to stay off the main trails to avoid them. We ended up hiking Lost Farm Trail, which was nice and scenic, to Cliff Walk. Both were good to hike, alternating steeps and flats and traverses. We lost the trail a couple times but we weren't paying especially close attention either.

It was nice to see Bald Rock, I guess you miss that if you take White Dot all the way up. We chilled at the summit for a while and decided to head down to get to the car before it got dark and cold. We followed the Pumpelly Trail to the Spellman Trail. Spellman was awesome. Steep and rocky. I would like to climb up it sometime. We followed some flatter trails back to the lot, Cascade, something else, I'm not sure, I wasn't really paying much attention either. All in all, a fantastic hike. I really enjoyed it, although my nice Gore-Tex lined hiking boots either aren't broken in yet or are a bit too big. I have a couple blisters. I'm going to wait and see how they are in the winter with thicker socks. They might fit well with ski socks, and I might just have to buy different boots/shoes for the spring/summer/fall.

Here are some of the pictures from the hike:

The lovely Irina, who not only baked goodies for the trip, but kept up the whole hike with what I would consider a brisk pace (we did a lot of passing, and didn't ever get passed). Tre cool.

Jon and me enjoying the Spellman trail, which was quite steep in places
