Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been eliminated!!!

For those of you who have trouble with those names, he's the dude that's been causing all sorts of hell in Iraq as Osama's #1.

To keep this news update non political, I'm just going to withhold my opinions and stop here.

Yes, despite political ramifications, reporting the news I don't think will be construed as expressing political opinion (not that I'm attempting to speak for the moderators or anything).

Not only Zarqawi but also his close "spiritual" advisor and six of his top command structure are also believed to have been killed in the air raid.

Finally.

I especially liked his April video depicting his "shooting" skills  Or lack thereof!

Glad to see him eliminated
but seriously, :-x Iraq is a sidetrack
Now imagine if we went after Al-Quada ONLY after 9-11

If that didn't cross the line, you walkin' right on top of it...

Well, I think this should be in the "How to get rid of a groundhog" thread.

So BobR, time to call in the groundhog air strike!

Seriously, knowing that "Al Z" is with the virgins moves me about as much as tossing a dead groundhog in the trash. Good riddance!

We are officially stepping on that political line; tread lightly please.

It'd be wonderful poetic justice if his 72 virgins turn out to be men.

On a more analytical note, one has to wonder what effect this will have in Iraq. COnsider:

1) There is some evidence that bin Laden and Zarqawi had a falling out.
2) Some of the information that located Z came from people within his organization
3) The "insurgency" is known to be rather decentralized
4) A new "head" has already popped up and started making speeches.

All in all, while I don't mourn his death at all, the death of Zarqawi will probably have little efffect on anything, and may make things worse as different factions vie to take power. I hope not, and I hope that knocking him out weakens the movement significantly, but I just kind of doubt it.

On a slightly more political note, I think we'll see Zarqawi's death being trumpeted by the GOP all teh way through November. Too bad they couldn't have timed it a little later, but it certainly covers up the defeat of the marriage ammendment yesterday.

Slightly more political?

Let's please keep this focused on the news aspect of this event, rather than the poltical ramifications. Next political comment and this gets locked (I suspect it's inevitable).

Nothing is inevitable except death and taxes.

I heard a radio talk show host say there was typo in the Kuran and what it actually says is 72 Virginians, not 72 virgins.
