Resort:Mount Snow
Date Skied: 1/20/06, 9:30am to 2:00pm
Conditions:soft spring snow, sticky wet snow, hard pack, ice, bare spots. Temp around 40.
Trip Report:
I was hoping to find a trip report posted on Thursday from anyone who when skiing up in southern VT. I was debating between going to Butternut or Snow. From reading reports about this week's rains and speculating that the areas would be wiped out, I thought I could drive 1hr and hit Butternut and assume I made the right choice.
As I approached the Mass Pike exit, I said to my self it is only about 40 minutes further to Mt Snow. I pulled into Carinthia about 9:15 and thought to my self, "It rained here???". The Nitro quad was going the ½ pipe was as big as ever, and there was snow. Let me tell you that I was very impressed with the conditions today. Sure they lost some snow and there was boiler plate on some trails on the edges and some in the center, overall the snow held on to the mountain rather well.
The sun had come out and softened the snow on the lower parts to make it sticky. This was easily avoidable by skiing in the shaded areas where the snow was still soft. Of course you got to look out for an occasional sheet of ice.
The summit was a little breezy and the sun disappeared behind the clouds making an occasional appearance for the rest of the day. The North Face area was February like, meaning plenty of coverage on the open trails, the snow was soft and carvable. No slush. My trail pick of the day was PDF. It was not bumped up and looked to have been groomed. The upper part of it did have some boiler plate. The trails near the Outpost lift looked to have lost some snow. I am not sure if anything to the left of the Challenger trail ( as you are skiing down) was open. Beartrap was ½ of its normal self.
I had a blast, getting a lot of runs in. No crowds and no lift lines. I am glad I came here today. It was well worth the extra 40 minutes. Get out and ski this weekend!
The ride up the Nitro quad. There are some bare spots on the edges.
I think this was from the top of the Canyon Express area.
I forgot how wide trails can be. This was Snowdance. It is huge.
The PDF & Plummet intersection.
Back to NorthFace. Looking up at PDF. Excellent coverage, just bump-free. I had to fight all of the crowds (sarcasm).
Looking down PDF.
The lift loading area for the Challenger in the distance.
Now over to Sunbrook, the Quad was not running, so up the Beartrap double to work my way back to the main mountain. The left side of the trail lost some coverage.
