Date(s) Skied: Sunday, 2/14/2010
Resort or Ski Area: Mount Sunapee
Conditions: Machine Groomed, Crowded, Windy
Trip Report: Didn't want to go to Sunapee today but I had passes to burn and I wanted to get out somewhere with the spouse for a ski date. As expected, it was quite crowded...showed up just after 8:30 and the first lot was already full. :-?
Lift lines were there but were not terrible...think our longest wait time for the HSQ was about 10 minutes. Slopes were more crowded than I like but not unexpected.
The slopes were in the best shape that could be expected given the lack of natural snow and the crowds...OK in the AM but they were getting skied off later on. The snow surface also seemed "noisier" than the snow that we skied on at Crotched a week ago.
The best part of the day was that I was able to get my spouse to ski most of the blues...on previous trips she stuck to South Peak and Ridge off of the summit. We also had a chance to check out a few of the trails over near the terrain park, which were short but stayed in nice shape, even after lunch.
For those of you that like bumps and don't mind seeded ones, you should give Sunapee a try...they have four separate bump fields (the one on Upper Flying Goose is a nice size) and from what I saw from the lifts three of them looked quite skiable.
Another interesting part of going back is how one's perspective of an area's difficulty changes over time...while I still think that most of Sunapee's blues are true to their trail rating, the blacks are not much more steeper or difficult, and I don't understand why they rate Goosebumps as double black. Yes, it's a bit steeper than the other trails off of North Peak, but it's not that steep.
