I watched the Medi-Vac copter land at the Vernon flats to take some poor soul away last night.

my hopes are that they are ok.

But this convo really does hit a point...considering just last year I was a first time skier and now doing blue's and blacks.

My first time on the slopes... I was petrified, not so much in my own skiing abilities but for boarders flying down beginner slopes, and those designated beginner slow skiing areas.

Those areas are there for a reason, why tear down them when you know there are many first timers on them?

Once you are comfy enough to do blues and up... my approach changed. As soon as I was able to do blues... did my wide turns but I stayed to the sides and let others pass by then I would go on. my thought is that it is not a beginner slope, and thus the omus is on me to be courteus to others. Same thing with the difficult blues and now blacks for me... great thing is there are usually no asses tearing down the slope out of control, but I still let them pass if i am not toooo comfy on it yet or they are speeding down.

When I get to the ski area, I like to warm up on a green run, but guess what... if there is a novice skiing nice and slow, I dont have a right to complain.

Great thing about skiing more difficult runs... usually means less pre teen snowboarders, less people in general, and friendlier people. as a result feel more confident skiing there knowing the odds of me being plowed down from the back are alot less. :spread:

I can't carve steep Icy sections more than a 1/4 mile or so before fear takes over and I skid a few turns to control speed. East coast skiers can ski.

At least here when it's Icy the idiots slow down.

I think the bigger key is that people should always try to ski in predictable patterns. It's fine if you want to (or need to) use the entire width of the trail. Just don't suddenly stop or turn in a different direction. As long as you're predictable and consistent, as an uphill skier I'll be able to plan accordingly.

The problem is that the skiers that ski in that fashion ski once or twice a year and either don't know any better or it's the only way they can negotiate their way down the hill. When you're a beginner you can't always stop and turn where you want, especially on icy terrain. Also their legs are tired from using muscles they don't usually use.
