Date(s) Hiked: July 3rd 2004
Trails(s) Hiked: Air Line, Chemin des Dames, Kings Ravine
Total Distance: Not sure approx 10 miles
Conditions: Changing, Cold above tree line and windy, felt like 50F
Special Required Equipment: wind jackt but left it at home
Trip Report:
I left my house in Augusta at 7am Saturday and arrived at the trailhead right around 9am and it wasn't looking good. Giant grey and black clouds were covering the entire top of the mountain. I decided I should push on because I drive 2hrs anyway.
I headed up Air Line which was nice it was not hot and no sun yet very comfortable frst hour of hiking...the trail was dry and just a few moist spots to dirty up the footwear. Once I hit the tree line the weater was not very kind and come to find I had forgotten a wind jacket...I wasn't sure if I would make it to the top the way things were looking. I continued up encountering more pepople daweing wind jackets and I was feeling mighty stupid at this point. Reached the half-mile marker and the clouds were surrounding the whole area you couldnt see any peaks it was cold, maybe around 50-55F and windy and damp. I had to make a choice to peak or turn around and some encouragement from other hikers I made a dash for the top only being able to see about 30ft ahead. My hands were red and cold but I hurried to the top and summited at noon time, 3hrs was pretty good for me seeing my knee is not used to being worked real hard. I hid aroudn some rocks for a fer moments to warm my hands and a quick snack then back down again.
It was starting to clear up as I came down and the sun broke through a few times to warm me up. I was able to snap a few nice pics of the area while the coulds were away. I heaed down Chemin des Dames which by my book said it was an "easy" trail...I soon found it wasnt true and it was not much fun going down it. I connected up with Kings Ravine and the short line and headed back to the trail head. Kings and Short Line were wet and muddy for about 1/3rd of the trail...but it was na easy stroll back to the car and made it back around 4pm happily to my knee and feet....it was a great hike. I'm not sure of the mileage but maybe around 10miles, maybe someone could help me with the distance on some trails, all in all great hike except for the coulds at the top and the cool weather.
It's my 3rd peak this summer...Saddleback and The Horn being the other two looking forward to getting a lot more
Here is the gallery guys hope you enjoy them and thanks for reading my rambling. [/url]
