Date(s) Hiked:9/9

Trails(s) Hiked:Pachaug Trail

Total Distance:1.5 Miles

Difficulty:Easy

Conditions:Hot Hazy Muggy

Special Required Equipment:None, (kid carrier in my case)

Trip Report:My wife and I were planing a trip to Crawford Notch with our 4 month old for this weekend to stay at a camp ground in Lancaster that has the rustic cabins with heat and electricity, and a water spigot outside.

We decided against it figuring that a 4 plus hour ride for our 4 month old would be too much for only one day up there. We were to leave Friday evening, hike Willard on Saturday, and then come back on Sunday.

In liu of Crawford Notch, we decided that we would do a local hike.

Mt. Misery is a 441 ft hill located in the Pachaug State forest that has a ledge with an overlook. It is listed as one of the 8 best placed to view foliage in CT at this site....http://hartford.about.com/cs/fallfoliage/a/aabestfoliage.htm

There are several trails that run through Pachaug State Park as well as adjacent Hopeville State Park. Trail heads from roads outside of the park are well marked. Inside the park some trail heads are not marked and can be confusing. This is due to the Pachaug and Nehantic trails using the same blue marker. All and all ,the park was clean, maps where available for free at the headquarters office, and it was nice to just get out. It is well worth getting the trail map from the headquarters office. It was much more detailed then the one i used from online.

Anyways this was the first hike using a Kelty Kid Carrier. My 4 month old girl Addison loved it. She and i have been on many jaunts through the woods near my house using a front carrier but this was the first time for the rear carrier. She was all smiles and was so comfortable that she feel asleep for most of the trip.

The views from the top of the Great Mt. Misery were OK. (nothing like Willard obviously).
We had a great time as a family and decided to say the hell with it and go up to Willard in two weeks from now.

Pictures to follow....

Nice. Our little one is just 6 weeks. I can't wait to get him in our Kelty Pathfinder. Was that your daughters first run in the kid carrier? If not, at what age did you feel comfy carrying her around in it?

Congratulations, first one? This is our first and its quite a trip!

My Daughter is 4 months, two weeks old, and this was her first hike in the kid carrier.

I have taken her on several other hikes and walks in the front carrier style, baby Bjorn's, but if you over heat they will too.

I felt very comfortable at this point, but i believe that my daughter is an early bloomer... she was rolling over and sleeping on her stomach at the very beginning of third month, and by the end she had figured out how to roll from her stomach back to her back, and she can sit up on her own with a little assistance for very short periods of time. If i lift her from a lying on back position using her hands she helps me pull her up to a sitting position and with out head lag.

The key is once you think that she is strong enough for the carrier put her in it and walk around the house with it, go up and down the stairs and have your wife make sure that she is not slumped over or moving around too much.

You will know when its time. I tried one at three months in REI, (the piggyback). She was still slumped over and not ready for it,although she loved it.

Now she's strong enough with the help of the straps to keep her torso straight, Unless she is sleeping of course!

Thanks for the info. This is our first. We took him for a walk in the Baby Bjorn on a smooth, flat dirt path. He slept the entire time. But as you said, I was pretty hot and that translated to him being hot. Within the first few weeks he was able to roll himself onto his side but not quite enough to make it to his back. Hopefully we can get him in the Kelty for a few short strolls in late November. If not we have the Baby Bjorn and he will be ready to rock in the Kelty by next Spring.

Baby Bjorn is pretty good. Late November may work if at 6 weeks he's all ready rolling to his side (thats impressive).

Best of luck....Its pretty awesome showing them nature at such an early age. Last Saturday we went for a hike in the morning, and then in the afternoon drove to Narragansett beach. She was just enthralled with the ocean....

We are taking him up to the Cape in a few weeks. He will get his first taste of the sand, the bay, and the ocean. He won't remember it but my in-laws have a place up there so he will get many return visits. My parents are amazing people but they never took me into the great outdoors besides sports. I plan on getting my kid out in nature as much as possible.

Dido on that~! I believe that sports and outdoor adventure is a key component in raising a well rounded individual. Less TV, video games ect, more sports, teamwork, and family outing.

Again best of luck and congrats!
