Is there anyone here who used to ski Mt. Tom? I was a ski instructor there from '89-'92. Even though I now live in back in eastern MA, I wish it was still open so we could take the kids to ski there. Anyone know why it eventually closed? I checked out the New England Closed Ski Area Project website (cool site by the way), but they didn't really have a good explanation as to why closed.

I always thought Mt. Tom was a pretty good little ski area. The trails were just long enough to feel like you were really out skiing (unlike the "ski areas" here in eastern MA). The ski school was a great place to work and it was very highly regarded, and I learned A LOT while teaching there. I have a lot of really great memories of skiing there and it's too bad it's not open anymore.

Anyone hiking up to ski it recently?

I heard it was part mis-management and part that the land it was on was actually owned by the neighboring quarry. I guess the quarry wanted to expand its operation to the land the ski area was on so they closed it. Supposedly they were never able to get approval to expand the quarry so it just sits there unused :(

I skied there a few times as a kid, it was a fun mountain as I remember...

My wife in college went to MT Tom as her PE class. I think it was 1 night a week for half a semester. Getting credit for turns.

I used to to teach those sometimes. I would start off the semester with "OK, who wants to learn how to ski? Who wants to learn how to jump? And who just wants to go skiing? Then just give everyone a passing grade. It was real easy money. [/quote]

I too skiied there as a kid (70's) and suprise, I'm also a WNEC grad (86). It was the only place in the area for night skiing. Too bad it closed, another ski legacy dies. I always drive by it on the way North to ski and remember the "early years" of learning to ski. Gives me perspective on how far I've come, and how far skiing and equipment have evolved. Remember cable bindings, or those springy Marker bindings, how bout those pain-in-the-ass release straps, etc...
