Hughstan told detectives that he used the Internet to communicate with his friends and since his father took the Internet away, he was "just so depressed all the time,"
Teenage angst taken to a new level. Hell, I was depressed all the time, too, as a teenager. Doesn't mean I was going to take a gun to anyone. How very, very sad. :(

I wonder if he'll be able to update his myspace page from prison??

It can be a pretty sad world that we live in...

What a sissy, he didn't even kill himself. He should have killed himself in one these awesome ways instead of taking it out of his dad.

And seriously, couldn't the parents realize that the kid has serious problem with Myspace beforehand? I wonder if they ever talked to him about his Myspace issues? Doesn't the kid know the Myspace isn't even cool anymore and all the cool cats now-a-days use Facebook.

I might kill myself if I were a slave to myspace. Facebook's format is so far superior I can't even comprehend why anyone would ever even consider stalkign someone on myspace. What a piece of shit website.

This family had problems far beyond using or not using MySpace.

Exactly. I'm sure the same type of thing has happened over taking away other privileges—especially those which leave the kid socially excluded. Kids aren't brought into this world with instructions and much of what parents know they learned from their own upbringings. The rest needs to be learned as you go.

It's just sad. It's too bad to make this more of an internet issue than a family dynamics issue. My 13 yr old daughter really enjoys AIM and my son (15) keeps up his connections through Facebook. They understand computer time is revocable while we (wife & I) respect that the friendships they perpetuate are important to their well being. Frankly, I'd rather have them on line with computers that are in common areas of the house (we peak of their shoulders at times) than hiding away and dominating the telephone lines. I'm not saying we're perfect parents but our kids enjoy time at home and away with us while doing pretty well in school.

No matter what, it's painful to think of how this whole thing will play out for that young man and community around him.

ps The issue here isn't MySpace, Facebook or even AlpineZone (though I fail to see the attraction to MySpace beyond its handy tools for emerging bands-Facebook seems more socially relevant). It's about the the parent/child/friend relationship. The web just happens be be convenient and fuel-efficient. Bored kids getting into trouble is not a new issue either.
