Something you might not be thinking of, but in most cases, it is now time to replace that helmet. Most helmets are single impact, and after getting a hit, it is time for a new one.

It is expensive to replace a helmet, especially if it is fairly new, but heads cost so much more. ;)

For the record, I don't sell helmets, and have nothing to gain by this.

Glad to hear you are OK. That's got to be scary.

I've heard the same thing about replacing a helmet after an impact.

Whoa! Glad you're OK.

FWIW, that is the only sort of impact I've had with my helmet, too. I've never hit a tree or anything, but a couple times I've fallen backwards and my head has hit the ground. (Never on rocks, though.)

I don't sell any gear, unless someone wants to buy a pair of Bandits with over 100 days on them? :spin:

Is there some sort of "test" or inspection to tell if a helmet needs replacing?
My understanding is that the foam compacts, and no longer acts as an insulator from bangs.

Check with your helmet's manufacturer.

Yes...that is the fact. One impact and helmet should be replaced. I'd much rather say, "Damn, glad I had a helmet on" than "Damn, wish I'd had a helmet on". Brain buckets definitely worth it.

Check with the helmet manufacturer most will give you credit towards the purchase of a new helmet.

when you use a helmet, if it is an im-mold construction, whichthe most common ones are, its a thin layer os plastic and then about 3/4 - 1inch of foam. When the helmet gets impacted the foam is designed to basically shatter appart, and by doing this the energy from impact is transfered through the majority of the helmet, breaking andcracking. This is why the helmets arent soft to the touch, par say.. but yet help soo much.

i know if you have a Giro helmet they will give you something like a 10% discount. The Giro rep told us, but i dont recall how much it was. I would recommend bringing the helmet to your local shop that carries that brand, and have them call the company and ask about some sort of sales discount.
yes, 100$ may be a little expensive, but i can assure you that is FAR cheaper then spending even an afternoon in the hospital, which im sure you know.

good thing your uninjured, an incident like that will give most anyone a greater respect for what they wear on their head

yeah i have expierienced those conditions on and off, at night sometime you cant tell weather its a shadow, or dirt, but you cacn tell once you ride through it.. and i can only imagine that that would affect a snowboarder in a bad way....

i have my binginds dialed in at an 8, so im pretty locked in.. but last year when i was skiing with a few friends one of my buddies who just started hit one of those sticky dirt patches, and actually ejected out of his binding, fortunetly there were not rocks there and he made it to the snow....

keep wearing the helmets! everyone is.. as you know

"you might be a gaper..

I totally agree with wearing a helmet. I've been thrown backwards onto hardpack and banged my head and was glad to have had the helmet on. Never used to wear one until I met my husband, he conviced me that it would be a good idea, cause he had one and cared enough about me to buy me one. :)

I've also heard the same thing about a helmet after an impact that it should be replaced. That goes for both ski helmets, as well as bike helmets. Now after saying that, I wonder if I should have repaced my helmet.....that was two years ago and even though I hit my head on the hardpack, it wasn't that hard, just enough to give me a little jolt to the head and my neck and back was a little sore after, mostly muscle sore from the sudden fall.

First run last night at crotched I came upon a bare spot so I decided to just ride over it .. poor decision on my part .. the board came to a sudden stop but I kept going. I was toe side at the time so I was thrown backwards down the slope. I landed on my back but my head slapped hard on exposed rocks. The only damage is my neck muscles are a little sore today and I have a new rock board. If I had not been wearing a helmet I wouldn't be writing this today. Be safe out there .. conditions are changing..

Glad to hear the helmet saved your noggin. I actually almost faced planted once on Friday night when my sons where on either side as I was booking down SuperNova and I was forced into a brown spot. Scared the heck out of me, felt like someone hit the emergency break on the skis. :-D

What trail was it on?

I read this entire thread hoping to see a post like this. CONGRATS man. You won't regret it. I never ski without one ever since I bought it. Came close one warm day when I was skiing with my daughter. As I closed up the truck with the helmet inside...I paused and went back for the helmet.

It's like wearing a seatbelt. I can't imagine NOT wearing one (helmet OR seatbelt).

Try on a bunch and cancel the ego. Buy the one that fits best...that's the one you'll be sure to wear!

My son has worn one since day 1, and he never complains about it.

The bottom of shooting star, the run out area for Pluto's Plunge, the last little hill before you get back to the lift. I was slowing myself down when the board stopped but just the fact of falling backwards down the hill was jolt to the head. My neck muscles are still pretty sore one side. When I got up I saw the cover was very thin and many stones were showing through...

Ahh, yeppers. On Friday night we had to zigzag something nasty thru the entire area to find a decent path thru.

My son actually went down at the top of the lift for galaxy. He didn't see the huge rock exposed, ended up on his knees when he saw it and clipped a part of it. I went running up afraid he'd twisted his ankle or something.

alot of people dont realize it, of think about it.. but if you weren't wearing a helmet you would have a hat on or something to help keep you warm... the helmet is THE BEST HAT that money can buy.. it will by far keep you warmer tehn any hat, thats why a major thing is adjustable vents to increase airflow to help vent some of that heat when it gets steamy inside

i can't ski ski without wearing my helmet.. tried it once, and felt like i was missing a ski or something... it was making me worry so much that it wasn't worth it
