imo, this is one of the most important use of a helmet. even if there was snow on the ground, you could have slammed your head into boiler plate and still knocked yourself out or worse. helmets are great at reducing injury due to non-high speed impacts such as this.

alot of people dont realize it, of think about it.. but if you weren't wearing a helmet you would have a hat on or something to help keep you warm... the helmet is THE BEST HAT that money can buy.. it will by far keep you warmer tehn any hat,
this is not true in all cases. i wear hats instead of my helmet on super cold days due to limited coverage on my giro9. it is a great helmet for 95% of the days i ski. but when it is super cold out, a hat offers me better coverage and is thus warmer.

Wow, 12:48 and we have the post of the day, already.

Seriously, good on ya to post this Old guy on a board, I'll echo Sky on saying that seeing someone decide to wear one is a great step in the right direction. Definately get it replaced, and take it easy on that neck. Sometimes damage can have a way of sneaking-up on you later.

Glad you're OK. Please be sure to replace helmet. I had an accident last year, upon first look the helmet looked good. After further inspection, this is what I found:
