LIVERMORE — Yesterday, Nashua resident Manjunath Hassan conquered the last of the White Mountains’ 4,000-footers — or did it conquer him?
Hassan, who had previously hiked 47 of the 48 tallest mountains in New Hampshire, had summited Mount Carrigan and was headed back down when he slipped and broke his right ankle at around 2:30 p.m., said New Hampshire Fish and Game Warden Brian Abrams.
“This was his last one to check off,” Abrams said.
“He just slipped . . kind of a bummer on his last mountain when he was feeling so good about completing it.”
Hassan, 50, and his hiking companion used a cell phone to call Fish and Game officials, who worked with 25 students from the SOLO Wilderness Medical School in Conway and the Bartlett-Jackson Ambulance Squad to get Hassan down the remaining three miles of the Signal Trail.
Abrams said they were out of the woods by 8:10 p.m. and Hassan was taken to Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
Despite his fall, Hassan can still check this last 4,000-footer of his list, Abrams said.
“He summited so I think we’re going to give it to him,” he said.
